When you do the button band, you need to make sure that the button holes are evenly spaced out so that the holes you make will match where you will sew the buttons - hence marking where you will put the buttons to make sure the holes line up with that...

Tbh, I've never done that.. I just make sure I space out the button holes evenly enough - eg one every 6 rows and then match it up from there

There is a trick that I learned from the Elizabeth Zimmerman's baby surprise jacket and that is to make buttonholes on both sides.
This has two advantages:

  1. You can leave it till the baby is born to decide whether it is for a boy or a girl (buttons on the right for a boy)
  2. You are usually given the spacing for the buttonholes, that is every 8 rows or ten rows or whatever, if you do that for both sides your buttons and buttonholes will automatically line up.
When it comes to sewing on the buttons you just close the buttonhole with a small stitch and sew the button on top of it.
