Does anybody knit? I'm a novice knitter and I'm looking for some advice

I have a ball of wool which I was going to use to knit dd2 a scarf, that's all I can manage to knit.

On the label it says for best results use two balls of wool, simply work two rows with the first then two rows with the second, do this throughout to prevent irregular pattern, the wool has a few different colours in it.

Now I've been trying to find a photo online of what this wool will look like when knitted into something but I can't find anything.

My first question is, how do you knit with two balls of wool? How do you add in the second ball of wool?

Next question is,the only two stitches I can do are knit and purl. I usually do knit one purl one would this work with two balls of wool? or do I just knit two purl two?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ok, I take it that is the variegated yarn that changes colour along the line. If you have only one ball (how many grams?) you are not going to get much scarf out of it. I think to have a reasonable size scarf you will need at least 100 gram so there are your two balls.
Next: if you want to do a scarf I would do every row knit which is called garter stitch, don't ask why. So you do two rows with one ball, then you leave that thread that you have been working with, take a bit of thread from the second ball and loop it over the stitch as if you were still working with the first ball. Wish I could show you, but you might well find a video on youTube under:adding in another ball of wool.
Then you do two rows with that ball and then you pick up the other ball again.
See how you go with this information and come back with further questions if you like.

What DutchOma said!

Thanks Dutchoma, I should have maybe said the name of the wool, it's called Bonusflash and the ball is 100g. I'm assuming that using two balls of wool will make some sort of pattern.

Do you just loop the new ball of wool in and leave a little bit hanging out the side to be sewn in at the end?

I'll have a look for a video online as well, thanks.

It will make stripes with two balls of wool, that's why you have to change every 2 rows.

excellent,I've just had a go at knitting two rows then adding another ball of wool in, but in white as that's the only other colour I have, and it seemed to work ok. So I'll buy another ball of wool in the same colours and start it properly later in the week.

Thanks very much.

The two ball thing is to prevent pooling - where the variegated bits start to merge together to make big patches of colour or regular stripes.

And join Ravelry: Ravelry.com

They have a forum for beginning knitters and a load of other information as well

And yes, the joining in of the wool at the beginning leaves a little tail to be sewn in later. Only the first time though, don't cut the wool after every two rows, just leave it and then pick it up when you have done the next two rows.
