I'm just re-learning myself, so someone more expert will probably have a better answer, but personally I would have a ruler to hand and just keep casting on until the row measured 6 inches.

Or have I totally misunderstood the question (v likely)?

Well I tried that - put 50 on then when I knitted the first line it was about 8/9 inches - so I'm starting again

It will depend a lot on your tension - how tight or loose you knit. If 50 sts gave you 8/9 ins maybe try about 35?

You can always block it - dampen and pin out to size - if it's not exact when finished.

Actually, just re-reading your post, you need to knit a few rows to get a proper idea of how it's going to turn out.

Assuming by 'normal wool' you mean DK weight, your needles might be a bit big. Do you have any smaller? Say 4mm/size 8?

If it's aran wool, your 7s will be ideal. Sorry to confuse things. Tension is a bit of a minefield!
