Anyone do decoupage?

Just wondering if anyone does decoupage, and if so

How many coats of varnish do you use?
Do you cut the patterns out with scalpel or fine scissors?

I have only done 3-4 pieces. I tend to use very fine scissors but only because that was all I had at the time!

I used a glue/varnish all in one especially for decoupage, and from what I remember did about 3 coats in all.
I don't feel this needed to be that consistent, and parts of the project, say where the design was layered, had more coats- others had less.

I think as long as the whole thing gets 2 good coats that should be sufficient.

What are you doing? Are you using serviettes?

Sorry Dingle, don't have a clue with what you mean about serviettes

I have decided this year that I am going to make all my own christmas cards, so I have already started, some are stamped and then I have decided to do santa, angel, tree etc decoupage, never done it before,

Do you just place the first layer on the card, varnish and then varnish each additional layer?

Right, wires crossed, confused! There are two types of decoupage.

Do you mean 3D decoupage where you cut out layers mount onto 3D pads and stick onto a larger layer.

Or there is decoupage, where you can use cut outs of pictures, serviettes etc, and glue flat, onto a surface, cover them with glue/varnish.

I will try to find suitable links to show what I mean!

Right, just an example of decoupage

serviette decoupage

WOW, another thing for me to try , never been very arty, but trying alot more things recently.

The decoupage that I am trying at the minute is 3d, I'm practising at first, but want to do a really special one for my sister in law who is getting married again in December (not to my brother thank goodness)

I don't know if you know something I don't then- but I don't use varnish on 3-D decoupage cards!

Should REALLY be doing something else ATM, but will try to load a few pics of some 3-d cards that I have made. I have done quite a few of the flower fairy ones, look really pretty. You can use a little bit of glitter or glitter glue on them too. Xmas ones I have used white liquid applique, which puffs up and looks like snow.....

....must go...must go. Have fun.

Ooooh i might try the liquid applique. I am doing a special one for dd1, she is made about ballet and has just passed her third exam, so I am doing a 3d one for her, but, to give it a christmas look I am going to add silver glitter to her hair and tutu.
