Am a bit of a sewing novice. Would making an apron for DD be too difficult?

DD (2.8) is starting to get into helping with cooking but obviously she makes quite a mess. Until now I've used her old bibs (those long ones with long sleeves) but it's about time she had a proper apron.

So, would it be doable? Where on earth would I start looking for a pattern?

I've got a sewing machine and I can handsew, just not 'advanced' IYSWIM. Never tried anything like this...

all sorts!

Of course you can! Loads of help on internet. just cut round an old apron for the shape, hem and added ties.

One tip is to iron the hem up before you sew it.

If you're not confident with hemming, you could consider using bias tape to finish the edges too?

I have made this apron (pdf link) a few times for my girls, it's very easy to modify to different sizes. This is sized at a 2T and is fairly neat, but you could easily resize it.

Thanks for the replies!

I love the smock type aprons I've seen but I fear they may be beyond me, for a first attempt at least. TBH I'm intimidated by the curved hems, mybe they are easier than they look? My printer's given up the ghost too so I think I need something I can copy by hand...

Driven - if you'd feel okay giving your address to a total stranger I'd love to make one for your DD and send it to you? My email address is this username at gmail dot com.

I find the easiest way to deal with curved seams is to keep your eye on the outside of the foot - does that make sense? Go slowly at the tightest curves or use the knob to go by hand and you'll be just fine

I find the best way to do curved seams is to make 'em straight in the first place! Go for it!

The easiest way to make an apron is to use a tea towel. Here is how to make one without any sewing: redtedart.wordpress.com/2010/06/25/how-make-a-no-sew-apron-from-a-tea-towel/

Of course you can also make an apron out of a tea towel with some sewing using the same basic principles, there are many tutorials to be found online.

Hope that helps!

I made 6 aprons last week for my DDs friends to wear at her birthday party.

I bought tea towels which I cut at the top into an apron shape. Then just had to hem the raw edges and sew on ties. It was really easy and didn't take long to do.

The one I made for 2yo DS was a bit long so I just hemmed the bottom of it too.

Tea towels are good too as the fabric is thick and washes up really well. I found really cute tea towels which had cupcakes all over them too.

Another way of getting out of hemming is to make the apron reversable.
Cut the pattern out twice,
sew the front & back pieces right sides together, leaving a small gap for turning.
Pull the fabric through the gap so the right sides are now on the outside. Press
Handstitch or machine stitch the gap closed.

it might be a bit of a cop-out... but I have bought kids aprons at Wilkos for about £1.50 and then added names using block caps and zigzagged around.
