Hi there

I just wondered if anyone could give me some pointers on what I will be told during the scan, if anything. I understand I will have to wait a few days for the full results but will they tell me stuff as they go along?

I'm going to innermost secrets/Spire in Cardiff so if anyone has experience of this clinic I'd be grateful.

If they don't tell you what you want to know ask!

They didn't say a lot really about the 'nuchal' part in my case, just told me generally how the baby was developing.

They write on your notes the measurement and you get that back. I expect feverish googling would get me information but I knew better than to do that.

Then a bit later ( think about a week but pg brain hazy) I got the blood test result through the post saying that I was low risk.

ah, I have done the frantic googliing already . I'll sk lots of questions. On the phone they asked me about previous pregnancies and said things like miscarriages and terminations would be a factor as my hormonal balance could be effected which I thought was a bit odd.

Hi Mr Beattie will talk you through the scan, and you will see everything on a massive overhead plasma screen. It is incredibly hi-tech. In my experience he is more than happy to answer questions as he goes along.

Once he has taken the all important nuchal measurement, he will tell you and then input it into his database. This will give you an adjusted risk for each of the three main trisomies, which he will tell you.

Then you trot off to be weighed and have blood taken by his nurse. He usually rings two days later with a final risk factor for all three and can discuss with you what you might want to do based on these at that time.

Just one other thing, if your appointment is later on in the evening, he sometimes runs quite late - mostly due to the fact that he has so much time for everyone. So don't plan to do too much afterwards!

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

What Shangrila says really. It kind of depends where you go. I had the bloods taken 2 days before the scan so the sonographer fed it all into the computer on the day and gave me the final risk assessment, there and then.

She was great and went through everything in terms of nasal bone, tricuspid valve, heart rate, baby size etc while scanning.

When I arrived the first thing she told me was that the bloods were fine, so I was already a bit relaxed about the whole thing. Different centres will do it in different ways I guess.

Good luck.
