Anyone have any experience of a baby/child born with half an arm missing?

My friend has just found out at her 20w scan that her baby's left arm ends just below the elbow.

She is upset obviously, and has been thinking about what difficulties her child will face. Does anyone have any experience of this?

A good friend's sister (now in her late 20s) was born with an arm missing. In those days there was no routine ultrasound scanning, so her parents found out only when she was born - it was a bit of a shock, but they were told it was just one of those things that sometimes happens. My friend said that this group do very good work in helping parents - and kids - realise that actually this is surprisingly common, and that it's perfectly possible to lead a brilliant life with a limb or part of a limb missing. Hope your friend finds this helpful.

The son of one of my best friends was born without the lower arm and is doing really well - he has never known anything different. This is a great charity which may help www.reach.org.uk

My friends DP was born with half an arm. He runs his own (v. successful) business, fitting kitchens and bathrooms. He is a kick-boxing champion, who has won countless awards and now trains children (he could beat up most men who have two arms)! He also plays guitar and rides a motorbike!!! He's also a thoroughly nice chap. He puts us all to shame to be honest!!!!! Blush

He has a prosthetic but he says he only uses it for other people's wedding pictures! Grin

Yes me!
I was born with no left hand
I'm 33 so back then I don't think the scan would have shown that my hand was missing
It has not stopped me from doing anything I find my own way of doing things as will your friends little one
As others have said you can get arm made to help but again I found I can do more without it
Your friends little one will b fine let him/her do things

That what my parents did they got me to do things not them do it for me!
Eg. I can remember when I was little took me ages to learn to tie my shoe laces but keept trying with guidance n patience from parents I can
Lol! Now when people see me do things eg tying my laces they like wow! Would never thought you would be able to do that

So everything will be normal for him/her jus be in his/her own way
Xx

I haven't read the whole thread but there's a project called the lucky Finn project (I'll double check the name) my friend is a part of the group on Facebook. It is a great group and has some great experiences on it.

I'll double check the group but my friend found it extremely helpful.

Hello,
Emjaydawn I hope you are well and your little bundles arrived safely. We had a little boy earlier this year and he was born with one arm up to the elbow only.
It would be great to get in touch with you and maybe chat, share experiences etc.
Feel free to mail me on [email protected].
I'd love to hear from you or any of the other posters on this thread.
