Brilliant scan + terrible bloods = unsure whether to have CVS?

Hi Mums
Had my 12 week scan today. The baby passed its scan with flying colours, absolutely no problems there, but unfortunately mum's blood let the team down again, extremely low PAPP-A. Overall 1 in 160 for T18 and 1 in 10 for the other 2 nasty ones. Have decided to have CVS, after long struggle - surely the scans would have shown something if there were some serious abnormalities??? Sonographer agreed but said not always. Anyway else have good scan and bad blood and went on to have CVS?
I feel silly for being upset when there are other people on here worse off than me, and I already have a beautiful son aged 20 months - also the product of a low PAPP-A blood test, tho combined risk was no where near as high last time.

Can I ask where you had your test done? Did they combine the bloods and nuchal fold test?

Also - how old are you as your background risk might have started high?

I havent' been in your position but in similar and I always like to reply to these posts as got great advice on here and really expert advice from arc - ante-natal resources and choices, who have a daytime helpline. They are very knowledgeable and give good advice without judging.

Someone who has been in your position might be along soon but in the meantime if you look through some of the threads on here you might find something similar to you. Ring arc (will try and post the link but is probably on here somewhere) and discuss. Good luck.

Dear Londonista - sorry to hear about this and the terrible quandary it puts you in. Upset is normal, how could you not be upset? Don't be hard on yourself, it is a stressful time.

Not my own experience, but I know that Linspins had this - see her posts on it here (look for posts by Linspins Sat 18-Jul-09 21:43:45 where she gets initial results; and Wed 22-Jul-09 20:45:30 where they instead of getting CVS get detailed scan). She had a CVS booked at Kings; however they do detailed scans that take into account other factors such as whether the nasal bone was present, the tricuspid flow was normal, and the ductus venosus was positive. They then calculate odds based on bloods (taken again) plus these observations. I'm guessing it's not free, but if you're unsure about CVS it's another option.

Lin's baby was born in January, a lovely bonny boy.

Also as Fifitot suggests, you could contact ARC (Antenatal results and choices) to see if they can offer further information.

I hope all goes well for you with your decision making and with your pregnancy.

thanks all, great advice. At St Georges, so shuffled in and out (in tears) pretty quick - I sure unsettled that waiting room!
I am 39, so goes with the turf I guess. My son was teeny weeny when born, so I think I'm prob on track to have another wee one if the CVS comes back okay. Sonographer said somewomen are very prone to low PAPP-A, regardless of age. It was just that result out of the 3 they test - PAPP-A, FreeB-HCG, and the scan - that caused the prob.
Thanks for the ARC website - very useful!
