Quaduple test

I'm having another blood test on Tuesday as my nuchal bloods came out as 1 in 150 risk. I wondered if anyone else could please share their experiences of the quadruple test. I'm now freaking myself out as the midwives words of "remember your odds could go either up or down with this second test" are echoing around my head.

1 in 150 is not actually that high a risk it is less than 1%.

It is pointless having more blood tests - you either live with the risk and try to block it out or go with amnio.

Hi MLS. I don't think I'd agree that having more blood tests is pointless. From what I understand, the quadruple test is a later test done after about 15 weeks (whereas your nuchal must have been around 12) and it measures a different set of markers in your blood. This might change your odds dramatically so if you go from 1:150 (which is still pretty good - you wouldn't bet on a grand national winner with those odds!) to 1:500 or something, then the decision whether to have an amnio would be a lot clearer. It also looks for markers associated with other conditions which you wouldn't see at the nuchal scan.

I should say though that I've never actually got that far myself - my nuchal odds came out at 1:4 so we went straight for CVS, but I think in your case it sounds like a really good idea. It is true that your odds could go up or down, but either way I think it makes the decision on whether to go for an amnio a bit easier, and hopefully the odds will go in your favour. Good luck - I hope all turns out well.
