1.150 nuchal results - bleeding affects hormone level?

Hi there I've had a call from the hospital today saying I'm right on the cut-off point with regards to my combined nuchal results - 1.150. I was told that one of the hormones they tested was slightly raised & this can be affected if you'd had any bleeding. I'd had blown bleeding one morning two weeks before my scan. Does anyone know anything about this bleeding affecting this certain hormone, & what hormone is it?

I'm at a loss to know what to do. I guess you could look at 1.150 & it could be good odds. They have offered me a cvs or an amnio, I just don't know what to do.

I'm 40 btw & the nuchal scan measurement was 1.3mm.

Sorry you are dealing with this. It is scary isn't it? I went through the same.

This measurement of the scan is combined with a measurement of special blood proteins, named the ?free beta human chorionic gonadotrophin ? free Bhcg? and ?pregnancy associated plasma protein A ? PAPP-A? are interpreted in a special algorithm to determine the risk of Down?s syndrome.

Copied from a site I went on when I had the nuchal. Really don't know about the bleeding.

The nuchal measurement is low so doesn't seem worrying on it's own. Did they look for the nasal bone?

BTW 1 in 150 is still decent odds if you think about it but being right at the cut off is hard.

Everyone on here will suggest you contact ARC - antenatal results and choices - who have a great helpline for advice.

Thanks Fifi, I like the idea of a private scan but dh has vetoed it on the grounds that he thinks 1 in 150 is good odds. I'm sure I remember her saying she could see the nasal bone. I have an appointment with my consultant next Friday (due to recurrent miscarriages) so I hope he can tell me more but that is a week and a half away.

So what happened with you? Did you have any invasive tests?

No - my odds were 1 in 250 and was pretty pleased with them. I agonised over the decision of whether to have an amnio and even went on the day for the test but didn't have it. Rightly or wrongly I went on instinct and so won't know if made the right decision until baby born.

Having spoken to ARC and read a ton of stuff on here and on internet in general, I really changed my views on the Down's risk. I think I went from thinking I would terminate an affected pregnancy to thinking...well actually I just can't do that. So felt the Amnio would not really help me.

The website of the Fetal Medicine Foundation is really informative about the the nuchal screen. I have read about it extensively and it is up to 90% accuracy now in terms of detection rates - though it depends on who does it and if accredited to FMF.

I found the NHS consultant very blase about amnio - easy for them, they do it all the time. The sonographer who did my screen was brilliant and would say again ARC, give great advice without judgement.

Let us know how you get on - and good luck! Remember your risk has come down as not purely based on age.
