Question re amnio results

Have booked an amnio for 30.12. Will have initial results in 1-2 days and then have to wait 2 weeks for full results. Have tried to read everywhere but have no answer as to what the full results give that the initial results can't give. Does anyone know or know where I can find out? Will obviously ask on day of amnio but trying to get as much info as possible.

I had amnio with ds1 and ds2. IIRC the initial results are for the most common problems i.e. Down Syndrome and full results are for more rare problems.

We had our test on Friday and were told that the initial result gives an indication of the final result but that they may be contradicted by the final, and accurate, result.

We decided not to bother finding out the interim result as we wouldn't be able to rest easy until the final result was known anyway - we didn't want false hope.

That was our understanding anyway - but check with your medical experts on the day as the advice we have received from our 'experts' hasn't been of the best quality!!!

Thanks for your replies.

Smileypigface do you know what the chances are that the final results contradicts the initial result? The wait is driving me mad already! Good luck with your result.

Jabberwocky is right - the initial results tell you whether baby has the wrong number of chromosomes 21 (Down's syndrome), 13 (Patau's) and 18 (Edwards). They can do these ones quickly because they just look for 'markers' of these chromosomes and don't have to 'process' the sample for as long. They then go on to count all of the chromosomes in baby's cells but this takes a lot longer. So after a couple of weeks they can tell you exactly how many of each baby has - this confirms the quick result but also looks for much rarer conditions. It is extremely unlikely that the quick test will give you an incorrect result - it is 'as close to 100% as possible'. But it will only tell you about the three most common chromosomal differences - the longer wait is for the others. Hope that helps and hope everything works out for you.
