My sister's triple test result has given her 1:29 odds of problems

Apparently the nuchal fold scan looked fine, but she's being advised to have an amnio to be sure. The hospital she's under says the test can throw up lots of false positives. Advice?

Sorry - that was in another post, not by the op.

My mistake. It is right, of course, that they offer the diagnostic screening.

lijkk- mu age related risk was 1:84 at 41. It's something over 100 at 39, so they must have picked something extra up. It's just a question of what and how accurate the test is.

This link states that the triple only gives 25% false positives in older mothers.

And completely contradicting what I said earlier, , but a link says that the rate of false positives goes up with maternal age. I read elsewhere the overall detection rate is 42% (less than the 60% given in previous link); the difference makes me think that both false positives AND the detection rate go up with age.

Before worrying about risks of miscarriage after amnio, it would be an idea to look into the miscarriage rates of the amnio team (doctor & ultrasound specialist) of her hospital. 0.5% is a frequently quoted figure of global average, but this is a figure from 1970s and before systematic use of ultrasound during amnios. Recent studies have far lower numbers.

I relaxed after I found that the amnio team of our hospital had only one miscarriage in the years they've been doing amnios, and that was a 42 year old woman whose pregnancy was a bit on the delicate side to start with.
