CVS experience? (TW: mentions previous miscarriage)

Hello,

We're very excited to have made it to the 12 week mark after 3 previous miscarriages. I have a balanced robertsonian translocation 13:14 which means I have a higher chance of trisomy 13.

My genetic counsellor has booked me in for a CVS on Monday, which I'm super anxious about. I've never gotten this far in a pregnancy before and I'm just so scared of the miscarriage risk associated with a CVS.

Has anyone else had a CVS? Open to positive or negative stories. Just really torn on whether to proceed or not. I've seen a lot of people having NIPT, but that hasn't been suggested for me. Of course the genetic counsellor is the best placed person to advise and I'm sure they've recommended what's best - I just don't have a good feeling!

Thank you :)

Hiya, I’m sorry to hear of your losses and what you’re currently faced with, I too required a cvs, this was following a 5mm nt measurement at 12 wk scan. Prior to this I had had 2 miscarriages at 8/9 week mark so was heartbroken to be faced with bad news upon finally reaching 12 wks.
In my experience cvs was absolutely fine and totally worth it to get some diagnostic answers. I felt no pain, just a very brief odd feeling when the needle was in, then the rest of the day I rested on the sofa and next day felt fine to be back to work (sat down office job though!). I’m now cuddling my healthy 2 wk old baby girl, so most importantly hold hope! Be very kind to yourself through this process because it’s of course a huge challenge mentally. I wish you so much luck with your pregnancy x

NIPT won't pick up your balanced translocation which is why it won't have been suggested for you.
Miscarriage risk is low with cvs and even lower again with amino. Have a chat with your Dr doing the cvs and get their personal risk factors. Dont be afraid to delay until amnio if that makes you more comfortable (not that I thinks that is required, just what you feel most comfortable with). Also contact Arc they can offer great support. Be kind to yourself. Hoping for the best for you

Thank you, I'm so pleased to hear you got your happy ending that must have been so stressful!

I'm glad the CVS went well, that's reassuring to hear. Think where you become so used to bad news you always expect the worst. I had arranged to go back to work in the afternoon (office job too) but may be being a bit optimistic! X

Ah thank you, that makes sense. After looking into the figures I had been toying with delaying to amnio, but equally impatient to know all is okay!

That's super helpful - I'll look into Arc too.

I didn’t have CVS, waited until Amnio which was totally painless. I didn’t even notice when the sonographer put the needle in, nothing. She’s also a surgeon. She was very reassuring.

I was really anxious about the cvs, but it was really straightforward. It was a little sore after but overall no issues. Hope yours goes well 💛

Had a cvs at 13 odd weeks, no problems from it whatsoever and baby turned out perfectly healthy

I had a CVS and I also have a translocation with 13 and 14!
This is my first pregnancy I am now 21 weeks. My consultant said the risk was so minimal about 1:200 I was 13 weeks when I had mines. Procedure not painful just quite uncomfortable I would say and they needed to do it twice for me as they did not get enough of a sample. Results were in within a week and I got scanned a few days after as well to make sure baby was ok. I would have it again if needed

Thank you everyone for your lovely replies 😊 helped me feel better about this morning.

As you all said, CVS was pretty painless just a bit uncomfortable. Just resting up now and hoping the next few days go ok 🤞

I’m happy to hear so many good news/stories about CVS. I will be 8 weeks pregnant on Thursday and I need to do CVS due to a rare same gene that me and my partner have.

I’ve referred myself to st Thomas and Guy hospital as I’ve heard that it’s the best hospital in London for high risk pregnancies. I’m yet to hear from them.

I have also heard that UCHL and Kings College Hospital are also very good. I would be grateful if anyone can share their CvS experience done in any of these hospitals, the name of any specific doctor within the hospital would be very helpful. I’m anxious about the miscarriage risk and would want to go and have the CVS done by a very experienced doctor.
