24 weeks pregnant - Fetal Medicine scan - Worried

Hello ladies hope your all well, I just got back from my FM scan earlier and when they did the scan everything is fine with baby, no heart issues or infections however the NT was at 7.8mm which has raised from when I had my 12 week scan which was 4.8mm. I had a NIPT test and that came back as low risk for Downs, Edwards and Papuat so happy with that.

Because this is a IVF baby and I had a PGT-M testing before they put the embryo in and they have advised the embryo is all fine and no chromosome issues were detected. I asked the dr if this was normal for the 7.8mm NT and he said it could be anything i.e. baby might have a thick neck or they just don't know.

the Dr also mentioned to ask our fertility clinic if they checked the 23 Chromosomes, and if they had then there is nothing to worry about, the fertility clinic rang me last night and reassured me that it was all checked for the 23 chromosome, also for downs, edwards, patua and the embryo was all normal.

They will give me more scans to check babies growth so hoping everything works out in the end 😊

Just was slightly worried!!

Why are you worried if your fertility clinic did pre implantation genetic testing, checked all 23 chromosomes and your NIPT was low risk? Am I missing something?

What are you worried about OP? Everything was fine so it’s hard to understand what the worry is. Are the growth scans just because it’s an IVF baby?

How many weeks are you OP? If you’re around the 20 week mark, then that nuchal fold measurement is not quite comparable to the nuchal translucency measurement earlier on - the reference for “normal” nuchal fold is <6mm so it would still be classed as increased, but hasn’t worsened really since earlier on, more just grown along with baby’s growth if that makes sense. Increased nuchal fold in isolation is a “soft marker” for Down syndrome and other chromosomal/genetic differences, and the chance of any problem is now very low if you’ve had normal screening and PGT. Note that PGT doesn’t usually check for smaller chromosome differences and isn’t completely fool proof. If you are feeling very anxious then you could consider asking about amniocentesis for “microarray” to test for these types of differences, but if the scan is looking completely normal otherwise then you might not wish to take amniocentesis risk as chance of any abnormal finding is so low.

NIPT tests are extremely accurate as far as I know so I'd be reassured.

Says in the title she’s 24 weeks, not sure if that changes the start of your reply or not

Clearly I’m blind… no 20-24 weeks same applies re nuchal fold :)

Evening ladies, I am 24 weeks pregnant and I just have certain doubts and get worried, maybe its the pregnancy hormones I dunno! The growth scans they just said to keep an eye on the growth off the baby which I found strange but Im not complaining at-least I get to see bubba!

I just dont get how the NT can increase from 12 week scan to 24 week fetal scan? Maybe little one has a thick neck or something, my hubby asked the dr if that was possible and he said it could be or could be anything.

Hopefully everything be's okay until little one is born

I had a very high nt reading at 12 weeks and was informed the potential reasons are as follows:

  1. A normal finding and cause no problem for your baby.
  2. That your baby carries an extra chromosome. The most common ones are Down Syndrome, Turner syndrome, Edwards and Patau syndrome.
  3. A viral infection like Parvovirus, CMV or Toxoplasmosis.
  4. Due to a leaking valve or an open valve in your baby’s heart – sometimes this is not found when the baby is born and causes no problems at all, sometimes it heals on its own.
  5. Because sadly your pregnancy is failing.

Hopefully the extra scans of the heart, chromosome testing etc you've had reassure you on most of the above.

Have you had a torch blood test? That was something I had to rule out the potential viral infection cause.

Hopefully it's all completely fine in your case - it sounds like if they're offering extra scans for growth only there's no current major cause for concern.
