1:3 risk of Down syndrome

I just wanted to document our experience of the combined screening as when we were going through the results I was desperately reading everything I could. We had a risk of 1:3 and our baby daughter was born completely healthy 3 weeks ago.

At the 12 week scan in April the NT was 3.3mm but the sonographer really struggled to get the reading at all, personally I think the baby was wiggling so much she should have abandoned the reading.

HCG was 3.67 and PAPP A was 0.43, I was 27 at the time of the scan.

All of this gave us a result of 1:3 for Down’s syndrome, it was incredibly scary and confusing, I couldn’t understand why the result was quite so high even with lots of research into it.

Our NIPT came back low risk and we decided not to do any further screening as this wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the pregnancy for us. St Michael’s hospital in Bristol were amazing and offered us additional scans with the fetal medicine consultant throughout the pregnancy after the results.

I just hope this can give anyone else in the same position a little bit of hope, it is so scary to hear unexpected news about a much loved and wanted baby, we are so fortunate that all turned out ok for us.
