1 in 58 chance of Down syndrome

We had our 12 week scan, baby had an NT of 3.7mm, the combined test came back as 1 in 58 chance of Down syndrome which seems high and equally low? They said the rest of the scan looked good and we’ve opted for the invasive test to find out for sure, find out on Friday having it done tomorrow, but is there a high chance my baby will have Down syndrome? I’ve been filled with so much worry and anxiety and read the whole of Google. I just hope my baby is okay

I’ve been there with a similar risk. This is a very very very stressful time and I’m so sorry you have to go through it.

the only thing I can say is whatever the answer is, the baby is already there growing away. You can’t influence what the answer is, only how quickly you find out.

this is hard to explain but we drove ourselves mad with risk. It is a statistical model with individual features from your pregnancy thrown in. At the end of the day, someone will be that one, and 57 won’t. I know that’s not reassuring but there is no solution to be found in the numbers, and I only learnt that after wrapping myself up in them a lot.

I’m answering because I googled and googled and struggled to find someone who had been in my position.
my baby doesn’t have DS, by the way

Invasive test is the only way to go. You will get a proper answer.

A "one in whatever" chance is still a chance.

You will also be told the sex, if you want to know. If you don't want to know, make sure to tell them.

And rest up after the test. A CVS, I presume? That's what I had.

beasmithwentworth · 28/10/2024 16:47

If it helps.. mine was 1/2 so it really was 50/50.

I had the CVS the same day and got the results a week later. All absolutely fine. Maybe that has conditioned how I now thing but I think anything over 1 in ten - there is such a small chance. I understand that's it's scary and you have to wait.. but if someone told you you had a 1 in 58 chance of something happening would you think it was going to happen or not?

Well I had DNa testing which I think is a much better option as it’s not invasive but OP is booked in now. It may take a little longer to get results though (min 5 days)

beasmithwentworth · 28/10/2024 16:55

@Unreconstituted

Yes of course the 'one' could happen , but the probability is far lower, so most people would assume that you would have to be incredibly lucky or unlucky for whatever the event was to happen

@AquaPeer ’s post explains it better than I could. There is no solution in the numbers - only the more invasive test can tell you for sure whether it is Downs or not. And then if it is Downs, there is no definitive test that would predict the baby’s quality of life or what health problems they might face. 1 in 58 is not bad odds. Sending you a hand hold x

That still gives a chance. Not a definite answer.

No, but It’ll be something like 1:920000000 (mine was similar) if not DS.

Yes. That is a chance.

Unreconstituted · 28/10/2024 17:04

There is a 1 in 45,000,000 chance of winning the lottery. But people do, every week.

AquaPeer · 28/10/2024 17:08

I’m not a dimwit- I am obviously aware that 1:92000000 is a chance.
however had my original testing given me those odds I wouldn’t have Given them a second thought.
Also it was made clear to me that a baby with DS would show up as much much much higher risk under DNA testing. as you say, not possible for the test to give a yes no answer so basically it’s results are 1 in many millions or odds on. You don’t walk away with 1:58 from DNA testing

Had the CVS today and it went well, the NT was down to 3.1mm and the consultant seemed fairly optimistic, just have to wait and see now will try and update

It’s such a stressful time, with DS2 had a 1:15 chance, had a CVS, he didn’t have Down syndrome. He’s a healthy teenager now. Be kind to yourself, I’ve never forgotten how I felt.

Tinyandme · 01/11/2024 20:45

Baby is a perfectly healthy girl! So relieved Thankyou everyone hopefully this reassures anyone in the future such a scary time but it’s all okay
