Thinking about private NIPT any advice?

Hi,

We had 12 week scan last weekend along with combined screening.

NT at scan was 2.0 so all good. We didn't hear anything by phone on the bloods, so I assumed prob low risk, and I called the hospital and they were able to confirm this which was a relief.

Results were:

Downs 1:184
Patau/Edwards: 1:20000

My partner is 39 so I assume this was a factor in the slightly closer to high risk odds for Downs.

As a result, we think for peace of mind we should do a private NIPT. However I have no idea where to look. The hospital offer a private test for £500, but I can see clinics online from £250+. Any suggestions on what to do, and do you think its worth doing?

I am based in Somerset if that helps. Thanks!

I did one recent through window to the womb. It was around £250-£275 I think. I would really recommend. Results came within 4 days and great to have that peace of mind as it’s more accurate x

Some tests offer a wider range of testing for rarer chromosomal differences so you need to be aware exactly what the test the one you go for offers if you decided to do it. If you are only really interested in testing for the more common ones you don't need to pay for a test that offers lots more of the rarer ones. This might account for some of the price difference. Some may also offer things like letting you know the gender or not which may be a factor in the price. Otherwise they are all fairly standard some names are the SAFE test, Harmony test, but if you google NIPT (non invasive prenatal testing) it should come up with lots of places. Some NHS consultants do this as part of their private work which may give you peace of mind for the quality of the test you choose, so it might something you look at to see if any of the consultants from your local hospital do this.

Whether is is worth doing is very personal, and may depend largely on what you would do with the information if the result was higher risk.

Thank you for your reply. We booked one with window to the womb next weekend!

Assuming you are the mother and your partner is the father, your partner’s age is not taken in account in the combined screening, and it will be the bloods results suggesting increased risk.

If it is the mother who is 39 then yes the elevated risk is almost certainly explained by maternal age: risk is about 1 in 100 for a 40 year old so actually your result is lower than average.

Thanks. It's the other way around, I'm the father and have been given mums net duty by my wife! Appreciate your reply 😀

Hi, can I ask what your experience at window to the womb was? I'm tempted to get a private NIPT done if not offered via NHS so looking g at different providers. Your experience would be appreciated! Thanks

We used window to the womb and would recommend! I think we paid £275 for advanced NIPT, you need to also have had a scan so they know you’re over 10 weeks. If you haven’t yet had one you can do one there for about £90. We did ours on a Monday, they called on the Friday to say all ok and sent results by email same day x

I can see you’ve booked it. I had similar results 1:160 for downs which was just outside the high risk threshold. I got NIPT but only the downs one so I managed to find a cheap £250 one as I didn’t need all the other tests.

came back clear luckily

hey it was fine. results came in under a week. the practice is a bit unusual - sort of like if love island was a surgery! anyhow I'd recommend it.

I am on the fence on what to do about NIPT. I just had my 12-week scan yesterday with the blood results, and they came back as 1 in 11120 for Edwards and Patau's and 1 in 898 for Down's. However, I am 39 years old and slightly obese as well, so I thought my risk would be a lot higher.

One of my younger cousins sadly had to terminate her pregnancy because of life-limiting conditions to the baby, so I am obviously a bit worried myself. But with my low risk numbers from the blood test, I don't know if I should get a NIPT test or not... There's a private practice nearby that does it for £400 (includes a scan), but that's a lot of money which I don't really have right now.

I've tried Googling but struggle to find price lists of nearby locations. I'm in Bournemouth/Poole.

Also just been reading up a bit about PAPP-A, mine has come back as 0.555 MoM, which sounds quite low. Is this something I should be worried about?
