Help! Confusing NT results.

Hi everyone,

So I’m very confused right now and am hoping someone has experience in this/ has been through this/ can help.
Today (Tuesday) (12w5d) I had a MFM scan after having my 12 week scan on Friday (12w1d) and being told that my baby had a NT of 6.3mm with no visible nasal bone. This obviously meant that regardless of any other results on my quad test I was high risk.
The MFM today was extremely thorough with his scan and told me afterwards that my baby’s NT measured up at 2.9mm, the nasal bone is present and the baby looks completely normal at this stage; this is after only a further 4 days. He also brought up the previous ultrasound image and stated that ‘it doesn’t even seem like the same baby’. This has obviously completely knocked me because I can’t understand how the fluid could have changed to such an extent in such a short period of time?! I quizzed the midwife present about perhaps a mistake being made with the first ultrasound but she was pretty adamant it wouldn’t be the case, I also quizzed her about there being a chance the baby’s position wasn’t ideal for the first NT measurement but she assured me the NT wouldn’t have been taken without a good position.

I guess I just want some answers as to the likelihood of the fluid decreasing to such an extent in such a short period of time and the likelihood that the original ultrasound was simply measured incorrectly. No one will answer my questions simply and I understand they don’t want to admit fault, but it’s extremely confusing for myself / my partner.

Has anyone had an experience like mine or know anything about the potential of this happening?

Thank you in advance!

Hi there

I haven't been in quite the same position but I did unfortunately find out baby had a NT of 8mm at our 12 week scan. When I had a further appt with a consultant a few days later, he said they wouldn't remeasure, it was enough cause for concern that it had been high when measured the first time. I also believe that the fluid starts changing around 14 weeks - my memory is hazy but something like it thickens and can't be measured? I know I found articles online about it.

How have they left it with you? Are you going to do a NIPT or diagnostic test? I had an agonising 2 week wait for an appt with Fetal Medicine. The day before we got our NIPT results back and it was high risk for T18. I was booked for a CVS the following day but the Consultant was in agreement that our baby was very poorly and we could start the TFMR process if we wanted to. I couldn't' prolong the agony any longer.

I really hope everything works out ok for you, if I was you I would get the NIPT test as a next step x

@MrsScotland
Thank you so much for taking your time to reply to me. I’m really sorry to hear that this happened to you; nothing prepares you for this.

I am currently waiting on my NIPT result which could possibly come back as a false negative as my results for the combined test came back high risk (1 in 2 chance).

I spoke to one of the nurses who was present at my second scan with the MFM consultant and she said today that in 10 years she hasn’t seen the fluid reduce to such an extent within 4 days. It seems everyone is confused.

Thank you again for taking the time to help and for your kind words, it’s appreciated x
