High NT of 5.6, NIPT is low risk - should I have amnio?

A high NT was picked up at a private 10 week scan, confirmed at my 12 week scan. The measurement was 5.6mm. Referred to Fetal Medicine who were very negative and said it would very likely be a bad outcome, asked if we would like to terminate the pregnancy without anything confirmed. This was heartbreaking to hear but refused to give up hope. I know that there is a chance that all could be ok as have read positive stories on here.

We had the NIPT which came back low risk for all 3. I have just had a 16 week scan, all organs look normal as far as they can see at this point and baby is growing as should be.

We are waiting for our 20 week scan so they can look at the heart in more detail. I am so unsure whether to still have the amnio? Does this test for a lot of other conditions? And what sort of things does it test for other than the main 3? At the moment, we have decided against it but so unsure. We have been made to feel that there must be something wrong due to the NT measurement. They have advised that the NIPT is very accurate. This is a very long awaited pregnancy so I have been feeling anxious throughout even before any of this.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice.

Amnio is diagnostic and will tell you exactly what chromosomes the fetus has, whereas the NIPT is a screening tool for 3 common chromosomal conditions (while pretty accurate, screening can still be wrong). So an amnio will definitely give you more information. It can also be used to check specific genes if one or both of you were known to be carriers for a disease - this is why I've had an amnio on the past. I personally err on the side of getting all of the tests I can so I know what I'm dealing with, but it's so stressful and I'm sorry you're having to go through this xx
