Curved cerebellum - spina bifida

Hi all,

I've just had a scan at 14 weeks. I've been referred to fetal medicine as they said the cerebellum was showing a curved shape.
They told me they wouldn't usually check for this until 20 weeks, however as they've noticed ot they're referring me for a more advanced scan. At first glance they said the spine looked OK. But this could be a sign of spina bifida.
They also said it could just be because it's still early and all could be fine.
I'm obviously thinking the worst now as I wait to be contacted (within 10 days apparently). My question is to anyone who has experienced this...could all be fine? Or are they just saying this to attempt to reduce the panic?
I've been taking Pregnacare since before my pregnancy as I had started taking for a previous pregnancy and then miscarried. As we planned to try again I kept taking it, so I've had my recommended dose of folic acid.

We've posted very similar threads at a similar time. I'm a little further on than you (coming up on 21 weeks) and have been referred to FMU because the sonogrpaher couldn't visualise the cerebellum, but the spine looked good. We weren't given any information at the scan but know from our own research that it could indicate spina bifida (or worse).

I have my appointment at FMU tomorrow so I will update.

Thank you for your response.
It's such a stressful time isn't it?! Especially having had previous scans and think everything is going really well.

I really hope you get some positive news at your appointment 🙏

Not the outcome we hoped for. Our baby has spina bifida. Based on the information we've been given we're not considering termination at this point, but I've had an amnio to rule out anything more nefarious.

The lesion is at L5 so low on the back so not as bad as it could be. The baby has a reasonable chance of walking, and shouldn't have cognitive issues.

Hoping I'm a good candidate for antenatal surgery, and will be meeting with a neurosurgeon in the next couple of weeks to make a plan.

I'm so sorry to hear that it wasn't the news you had hoped for.
I'm glad it's not as severe as it could be though! I pray it all goes as well as it can for you from here.
I have my scan at FMU in a week and a half, so I'll know more then.
