Panicking - Been booked with consultant not so long after 12 week screening

Hello there,

I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar. I have recently been sent an appointment for three weeks time with a consultant. There is no mention as to what this may be about. This has come 2 days after my 12 screening, so I am particularly anxious.

I already had my 16 week appointment booked in just after this.

This is my first pregnancy, I’m generally healthy, so I wouldn’t class myself as high risk. The only thing I can think of is the Lletz procedure I had in my cervix however this has already been addressed and I am booked in for a cervical scan.

I’m also supposed to heading away this weekend with my family to break the news, so I’m even more nervous than ever and deliberating whether to tell them.

just wondering if anyone’s had a similar experience and whether, if anything did show in the combined scan, they would call as opposed to just send an appointment?

Thanks

Give them a ring OP and ask what the appointment is for. I very recently had my baby and at our 12 week scan we were told that if there were any concerning results we would have a phone call within 4 working days, if results were all normal we’d receive them via letter within 2 weeks x

How old are you OP?

Gabby82 · 27/06/2024 10:41

Did your community midwife note any factors that would make you be consultant led? Give her a call and ask.

Thank you all, I’ve tried calling and been unable to get through to a midwife.

I’m 34. I had no indication at the booking appointment that I would be consultant led, so I’m just bamboozled.

I wouldn't have thought it would be related to the scan or tests. As PP said, you'd get a call. I was consultant led and had my first consultant appointment around that time. I'd guess it's related to the procedure you've had and the midwife forgot to mention it would mean consultant involvement. In really consultant led just meant two very brief appointments for me.

That’s what my logically brain is telling me @Gabby82 , thank you so much for your reassurance

It won't be anything to be alarmed about if they haven't told you why it is :). Loads of women get booked in for a consultant appointment, usually after something mentioned or listed in your booking in appointment.

If it was anything concerning about your current health i.e. blood test results or blood pressure, they would most likely have mentioned.

I got two consultant appointments accidentally booked in after having had a Lletz procedure, so the second one was a waste of time.

Hey OP. Did they fill in a form or something on your green book (if you have one). I have a form with a checklist that shows why I’m consultant led

Unrealnotunrealistic · 27/06/2024 11:04

Maybe you’ll be 35 when baby is due, would that not automatically mean high risk?

SPsmama · 27/06/2024 11:22

I'm 34 too and have been consultant led in both of my pregnancies due to co-morbidities, not age.

Had my first appointment with the consultant around 15/16 weeks with both, I'm pretty sure that's standard. I didn't see them again until 28 weeks after that (I have growth scans to go with the cons appointment).

Clover7 · 27/06/2024 12:28

Thank you again all, you’ve really calmed down, I was losing the plot a little bit (is all this worrying just life now?).

@Jinglesomeoftheway I think you’re right, I’ll take the three weeks and the lack of call as positive for now.

@SPsmama Thats interesting to know, thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much all of you. I have now spoken to the midwife. Although my chances of screening were low, I have a low mark for the Papp-a so I think they want to keep an eye on my throughout.

Glad to just have an answer.

Really appreciate a community of wonderful women! X

This is to do with the Lletz procedure (slight increased risk of pre-term labour due to possible shorter cervix). I had the same thing but my midwife mentioned it to me and they mentioned this at 12 week scan also - they said 'likely that it will just be one appointment with a consultant and they will discharge you back to midwife care'.
Check you badger notes, it will be in the 'my key details' section at the bottom.

As others have said, if it was a worry they would have called you and advised you. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

ILoveDaysOff · 04/07/2024 23:15

If your screening results are bad news a midwife (usually the screening midwife not necessary your own ) will call you. You wouldn't be given the result at a consultant appointment.
It's likely due to the LLETZ. The cervix will be measured so you'll be (probably temporarily) "consultant led" til the scan has been done and they're happy not at risk of preterm birth may discharge back to midwife led...

SwayingInTime · 04/07/2024 23:20

Hi
I'm a midwife and would assume that you were always intended to have a consultant appointment but that they're not scheduled until after the dating scan that's all.
Hope you get through to someone to confirm that's the case soon and congratulations!

mummyh2016 · 04/07/2024 23:30

OP did this come up on your badger notes app or a letter through the post? I had a random appointment come up for 2 days after my 12 week scan on the app, I didn't actually notice it though until the day of it. I'd had no letter. I rang the midwives who had no record of an appointment for me so said it must be a system error.
