Enlarged kidney and bladder at 20 week scan

I had my 20 week scan this week and we found out baby has an enlarged kidney and bladder, one kidney looked normal. We have been referred to Fetal Medicine and have a scan with them next week. The sonographer couldn’t diagnose what she was looking at but said it could be a few different things. We are understandably shocked and terrified of what is to come. From researching online it seems like if it is Hydronephrosis then things can resolve before or after baby is born and can be treated. However the bladder side of things scares me and it could be a blockage which could involve keyhole surgery.

I was wondering if anyone else has any experience of this at all that can offer some advice?

Hi there, what was the outcome of this please? We received the same news yesterday, and I am terrified about what it means. Hope everything is ok for you. Thank you

Hi there, I'm so sorry you are going through this. I just want to be clear that my situation does not mean that this will be the same for you. I wasn't sure whether to reply however I know first hand how it feels to feel hopeless and scrambling for some answers.
Our baby was diagnosed with LUTO and by the time we had been seen sadly it had caused too much damage in his body and in our case sadly we had to TFMR at 24 weeks.

Something must have happened between our private 16 week scan and the 20 week.
As I said, I hope this answer doesn't upset you as this in no way means this is the same for you as there are quite a few conditions that present in this way and there are treatments available depending on the severity etc. My advice would be to try not to Google too much as you'll never find the answers you're looking for and the only place you will is at your fetal medicine appointment.
Please take care of yourself and feel free to message me if you want to chat further, I wish I had someone with a similar scenario as there's really limited information out there to know what to do/expect. x

I'm so so sorry to hear that happened to you and the outcome wasn't more positive. I do appreciate you replying, as you say there isn't very much information available and I wished we asked more questions yesterday but we were so shocked/ upset. If they had found / diagnosed the issue earlier could it have been treated? Or would the outcome have been the same?

Hope you are ok and thank you again x

That's exactly as we were, absolutely shocked and numb and it's like your brain doesn't quite process everything properly until you're back home! I think you may be able to call up your hospital and maybe a midwife can talk you through some things, I had a midwife call me the day after and she did put my mind at ease at the time. In our case the sonographer couldn't really diagnose us with anything and gave us a few options of potential conditions but left us with more questions than answers.
We spent about 3 weeks going back and forth from FMU to try and figure out what was going on, I had amniocentesis to drain the fluid in his body so they could test it, I had an MRI also. Crucial growth in the lungs and kidneys are done from 20-24 weeks and unfortunately due to the blockage this caused havoc on his growth, so the MRI basically said that his lung size was half what it should've been, had this not been the case we could've explored getting a shunt in place to bypass the blockage and ensure the amniotic fluid levels were okay. So like I said previously there are things that are available to help treat it just depends on what the condition is and how extreme.
If they'd caught it between 16 and 20 weeks who knows how different things could've been.
You will be in my thoughts I'm really hoping things go well for you. When is your FMU appointment?
