I was meant to get my NIPT blood drawn today at 11w4. They pricked me about 10 times and couldn’t get enough blood! I know I have crap veins but they said it’s Cz of blood thinners that they can’t get enough blood !! I didn’t pay the full price juat rhe deposit! Am I to go to another clinic and try again or do I wait for the 12 weeks NHS one ? Thanks

Dehydration?
Try drinking a lot of water before it

I had the NIPT privately whilst on a daily injection of blood thinners (I have an inherited disorder that makes me prone to thrombosis, so during pregnancy I’m under a Haematologist and inject Clexane every morning).

I never have heard that this makes it difficult to get blood. In fact, I would have thought you bleed better whilst on thinners?! If ever a nurse has struggled to get blood from me, it’s usually because I’m tense, or dehydrated.

One thing that is possible with the NIPT and blood thinners though, is that they can dilute your blood and make it more difficult to get the concentration of fetal DNA they need to get a clear result. For this reason, I waited until almost 12 weeks for the test to make sure that there was a little more baby DNA circulating my bloodstream. I also (after advice) booked my appointment for the afternoon and delayed my morning injection by a few hours, to make sure my blood was a little thicker that day. They got around 8% fetal DNA, having needed minimum of 4%. I believe that the DNA should have been somewhere in the region of 10-15% by week 12, so the Clexane did have an effect.

Are you under a consultant that you can have a chat with?

You definitely bleed better when on blood thinners! In fact sometimes hard to stop the bleeding!

Yea it was just an excuse ! As obviously we bleed more as the blood is thinner! I am just going to have the nhs one now as I have that in two days time with the hospital xx thanks everyone xx

Can you go somewhere else like a private consultant’s clinic where they might have more experienced nurses?
