I am currently 13w 1d. I went for my scan yesterday and all seems fine apart from the NT measurement of 3.8mm. We have 2 healthy boys so it's a huge shock. I have been referred to John Radcliffe for another scan. They have taken blood but the results won't be back until next week. My anxiety is through the roof. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

So many threads on this lately. There's been a few of us in a similar situation.

The NT for my baby came back at 3.8mm, combined results came back 1 in 5 for DS and 1/83 for patau and Edward's, I'm 36 so increases risk with the NT result. I had an amino at 16 weeks - they did all measurements at 16 weeks and consultant said they were all in range and was hopeful results would be clear.

Initial amino came back clear after a week, my microarray came back yesterday (in the fourth week of waiting, it was excruciating!) all clear.

Have 20 week scan on Monday so I'm hoping that's also fine.

It's absolutely awful trawling the internet and forums but don't think the worst. Lots of people have had the outcomes they wanted.

Yep, and was in the JR too.
NT for first son 3.8mm second son 4.5mm
NIPT only first son - He's a perfectly healthy 6yr old.
Second son CVS (x2 because they didn't get enough on the first sample) + NIPT, now 4 and snuggled up next to me because he's under the weather.

Sending you positive vibes x

hi, I have just left a post similar to this so thought I’d read yours and I’m in a similar situation, went for my 12 week scan at just over 13 weeks and got result of 3.7 NT, blood screening came back at 1:5 for downs and 1:117 for E&P.

same thing, my anxiety has gone crazy and I’m now under a consultant, it’s all gone really medical and stressful.

im not eligible for any of the non invasive further tests as this pregnancy was originally twins… and I also can’t have the CVS due to placenta position, and I just don’t know how I feel about the amnio… so I think I’m just going to see how the 16 week scan goes.

my partner keeps trying to tell me it still gives us a 80% chance that the baby won’t have DS but the 1:5 just sounds scary to me!

The amino, I was told is much better than the CVS. I was supposed to have CVS but couldn't because of placenta position so I went back for the amino after 16 weeks.

Wasn't painful, just uncomfortable. You don't even feel the needle go in it's just the sensation of the fluid coming out.

Just got back from my appointment at John Radcliffe Hospital. My results came back for Down Syndrome 1:18 and Edwards / Pataus 1:2000. Scan all looked really good and the specialist couldn't see any obvious signs of DS - Nasal bone was apparent amongst other things. She was happy with the heart and other organs. She seemed quite confident baby doesn't have DS from what she could see in the scan but obviously can't guarantee.

Unfortunately, she couldn't do the CVS because of the positioning of the baby. I have to go back next Friday for an Amniocentesis at 15 weeks. They also want to see me at 16 weeks for a thorough scan on the heart once it's grown a little more.

I asked if she would measure the NT levels again but she said she wouldn't as it wouldn't change my probability scores. Despite this, I read on my records after it was measuring at 3.2mm this time. Last week it was 3.8mm. Slight improvement and now showing below the 3.5mm level of concern.

@primrose1234 in case it’s reassuring, I had a 3.8mm NT with one of my twins and 1:30 chance of downs. Consultant did a detailed scan (similar to yours) and found no structural abnormalities. She also reminded me that 3.8 is only just above the cut off for ‘healthy’ and in Europe the limit is higher. I had 3 cardiac scans. Ds is nearly 4 and completely healthy.

Good luck next week.

@anicecuppateaa thank you for a positive story! ❤️

I'm writing this because last week was hell for me and reading Mumsnet posts really helped me - so I'm adding another happy ending to the mix.

We had our 12 wks scan last week and were told the NT was 3.6mm. The nurse told us not to worry about it and made an appointment for us at Fetal Medicine for Monday. Friday evening they dropped a report in my online account saying my baby was 'high risk' for DS. You can imagine the weekend we've had. My bloods came back all normal but of course no one took the time to call and explain this to us. The NT was 1mm over and the other risk factor was my age (I'm 41). I cried all weekend. How the hospital can just drop a report like that without explanation on a hormonal pregnant woman is beyond me.

On Monday they scanned the baby and he was fine. Heart, brain, nasal bone - no sign of any abnormality. Still they proceeded to push the CVS test on us. We are committed to this pregnancy so any chance of miscarriage was a no for us. The doctor was nice but when I asked her how many babies she's seen being born fine with a NT of 3.6mm she replied 'maybe some'. As if it was a done deal my baby was going to be disabled. When I asked for the stats she didn't know them. I was given a 1 in 23 for DS. That's only 4%!!! (in case you want to calculate: 1/23*100 = 4.3 = 4%) So there's a 96% chance that my baby is fine. How that equals 'high risk' is beyond me and the NHS really need to look at this classification.

We then ended up having another scan that same day to check the baby again. The doc thought he found a hole in my baby's heart but couldn't quite see. He asked me to go pee and come back. He scanned again but couldn't see. Then he asked me to wait in the waiting room whilst he scanned the next patient. I waited 30 minutes (sobbing in the waiting room) to be re-scanned. My baby decided to turn into the perfect position the 3rd time around and the doc said there was no sign of a hole. He apologised for scaring me. I think doctors really need to think a bit more before they throw out assumptions like this.

Long story short, we did the NIPT and it came back low risk. We've been through hell and back last week and I hope this post gives some positivity and hope to parents who are going through this at the moment.

primrose1234 · 04/07/2024 21:36

My results came back all clear for any chromosome abnormalities. Heart is growing perfectly. At 20 weeks, I had sign off from John Radcliffe Hospital. Currently 30 weeks pregnant and all seems fine so far

Congratulations, @primrose1234! I'm sorry it was such a stressful journey, but I hope you are enjoying the newborn snuggles and now gummy baby smiles and coos.

Another update just for the benefit of others going through this.

My son was born on 28th July perfectly healthy and is an absolute dream.

For all you ladies searching the internet frantically and thinking the worst, that was me too but there is often a happy ending!
