I'm in Cardiff 36 almost 37 and a high risk pregnancy with anxiety and I'm looking at getting the NIPT before the nhs done privately.
I've seen the normal test which tests for 3 things - Down Syndrome

  • Edward Syndrome
  • Patau Syndrome
but I was looking at the advanced one too But not sure if I should get the advanced one. Thankyou xx

What’s their names? I got the panorama done privately. It’s become recommended over the harmony test because it can pick up more things. I lost a baby to triploidy and the panorama test was the only test that could pick it up.

Some tips OP:

  • Ask where the lab is that processes the samples. Some places still send them to the USA, which obviously adds extra time to getting the results
  • Ask how you will be notified of the results and what would happen next if the news is both good or bad. I've heard of cases in the UK where the results were sent via text and advised to find their own abortion clinic!
  • Note that if you have a larger BMI, they may not be able to get a result. Check whether you need to pay, if a 2nd sample is required
  • Discuss with your partner yours and their feelings and thoughts BEFORE having the testing. DH was on the same page as me, but some couples may not be.

After 4yr TTC, I finally got pregnant at 38. I paid for the NIPT, but unfortunately it showed patau syndrome. I chose TFMR. I was grateful to be able to have it done so early at 11 weeks. I've read on MN of lots of cases where they waited for the NHS testing, and were 17+ weeks before finding out. Much harder once you are showing and more people know.
I dont think the additional testing was available when I had it done, but you'd need to weigh up the cost and likelihood of those other conditions. How far along are you? Have you spoken to your MW or GP about your anxiety? If no, I would do so. Best of luck.

Hey Op. I’m 39, will be a month from 40 when I give birth. My original bloods come back as high risk for Down syndrome mainly due to my age and having a high bmi.
I was offered the NHS NIPT to test for the 3 syndromes you mentioned above. I had the bloods taken on Tuesday and got the results on Monday via phone call (can take up to 2 weeks). You can request face to face if required. If you come back high risk you are then offered amniocentesis - results for this are much quicker.
The NIPT via NHS is sent to a clinic in London and it takes them 3 days to separate the bloods etc. No NIPT is a diagnosis, it’s a probability from separating the chromosomes in your bloods. It’s 97-98%.
Sorry for the long message but I really looked into all this while I was waiting on my results as it was an awful time. Good luck with your decision

I just had the normal NIPT done and got my results 5 days later. Was such a relief. I personally think you should go by the price difference - how much are the two? If it’s £400 for standard and £500 for advanced, what’s £100 for peace of mind?
the others are so much rarer though that I’d probably just do standard

Thanks for all the great advice! One is called NIPT blood the first one and the second is advanced NIPT blood test.
Basic is £250
Advanced is £275 so diff of £25.
So results they said can take 7-10 days but still would be a lot earlier than nhs as il be 10 weeks when they said they can test xx

Ah i’d go for the advanced one then. I’m in Ireland and the bloods get sent to the US for panorama testing- they say 10 days but it was 7. I also got it done at 9 weeks. The harmony test could only be done from 12 weeks.

CatchAButterfly · 17/02/2024 19:40

For my first, I got the Harmony. For my second, I had the Panorama, which wasn’t available when I had my first.

Based on your screenshot, it sounds like the standard is the Harmony and the advanced is the Panorama, based on the additional testing included with the advanced.

I went for the advanced / Panorama the second time round because I wanted to know all possible outcomes and anything that could affect quality of life. Whilst the three included with the Harmony / standard are the most common, there are obviously more genetic conditions out there.

Just so you know, there’s an even more advanced one now:
