High NT result, does anyone have experience with NT reducing?

Hi, I had my 12 week dating scan today and the NT measured at 9.8 mm but in some angles was higher. I do have a higher chance of a baby with Down Syndrome but I'm waiting for the CVS tomorrow.
Does anyone have experience with a high NT result that reduces over time?
I can't seem to find anything to show anyone with a high NT from their scan that says it reduced over weeks... (Which I guess is an answer within itself) but I'm just looking for some hope.
Thanks all.

Hi @carrieND, I had a high NT (4mm) at my 12 week scan (they dated me 13+3). I saw foetal medicine at 16 weeks for a scan and it had resolved to a normal level by then and no fluid seen since. So yes, it can go down. However, the consultant did say he would expect it to be absorbed as the baby grows and it reducing didn’t really mean anything in terms of offering us reassurance that there was nothing wrong. Sorry you’re going through this, it’s horrible. X

Hi

You might have see my comment on a post last week, but just in case you haven't, I have added here

I had a NT of 8mm, and was asked to come back two days later for a consultant to check before I was referred to fetal medicine. At that consultant appt I asked if the measurement changed and he said they wouldn't measure it again, the fact that it was high at the first scan was enough (indicative something wasn't right). I also asked if they could see the nasal bone but they said that's not something they check in our area.

I'm not medical, but I have read that the NT measurement can only be taken between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days - after that, the fluid thickens into tissue and is no longer translucent, so test results become inconclusive. This could explain why the measurement has gone down.

@carrieND I posted some information about screening result outcomes and what they may or may not mean. Yours, as I'm sure you've been told, is a very high measurement. Measurements can increase between 11-13w6d but 'normal' is considered under 3.5mm, and anything over 3mm can be flagged as concerning. They do not measure after 13w 6d as the window of opportunity for the measurement to be meaningful has passed.

Were you given a blood test after your ultrasound? Have you got the results of this back and been given a risk score? I hope your CVS went ok - I wasn't able to have one because of the location of my placenta so I had to wait for an amniocentesis, and now I'm waiting for the results of it.

@Bloodystressed1 Did you have the combined test or just the ultrasound? Did they offer you any further testing based on your NT measurement or did you decide not to progress with any?

Bloodystressed1 · 15/11/2023 12:01

Hi @Hopeisneeded i had the combined test which gave me 1 in 2 chance of Downs (4mm NT, Papp-a 0.5 and hcg 2 MoM). I was offered further testing via an amniocentesis at 16 weeks, I had a private NIPT as a first port of call as I went abroad for 2 weeks after that 12 week scan. NIPT came back low chance of downs and others, I haven’t done an amniocentesis but I haven’t had my baby yet so I don’t know if NIPT was correct yet.

Thanks @Bloodystressed1 - glad the NIPT showed a low chance result. From what I understand the NT measurement must have been the only thing really pushing your chance so high. Hope you have a happy and health pregnancy.

@Hopeisneeded thanks - I’m 38 too which doesn’t help! I was told the Papp-A being “borderline” and HcG being higher also contributed. Hope yours all works out too, I saw your other thread, sorry you’re in this position too.
