Amniocentesis after 21 weeks?

Hi all,

I'm getting mixed messages from midwife and Dr Google, can I check...

Has anyone had amniocentesis after 21 weeks? (In time to TFMR if need be)

I'm running out of time for my NIPT results to return before I hit the 20 week mark, so it will be later, if high risk.

Lots of ifs in this post, but I want to be fully informed on where I stand, if possible.

Many thanks

Can I also check... does anyone know if you can opt in for amniocentesis or do you still have to be in a 1/150 range?

You can opt in but mind some of the staff's attitudes.... depending on their views they might try to discourage you from it.
(Which I find highly objectionable.)

Ah thanks, so you don't need a "high risk" result for it?

If your nipt returns high chance then you will be offered it, I don’t think you will if it’s low chance and there are no other indicators on your scans. I’ve asked similar questions on my own thread as I had a 1 in 2 chance and a low NIPt, but a high NT measurement (4mm) that can indicate a range of chromosomal disorders so was offered due to that. I didn’t end up doing one but my understanding is they can do it at any time but prefer not to do it between 23-32 weeks gestation in case it triggers labour, due to the baby potentially surviving but having severe complications being born at that stage. In my experience though they will do it whenever you like (past 16 weeks), if you insist. A positive nipt is fairly reliable for Down Syndrome and the likelihood would be that the amnio would say the same thing as the NIPt (not guaranteed though and false positive nipts do happen) so if you would TFMR for Down Syndrome then I guess you would proceed with amnio to confirm a high chance NIPt regardless of gestation…This all sounds so cold and matter of fact, apologies - I’ve responded on your other post and I really don’t think you should worry yourself unduly given you had a 1 in 183. I don’t think I would have proceeded with additional testing if I’d had your numbers as it is classified as “lower chance”. The chance of your NIPt being positive is tiny, according to those stats. It’s easy to say, I know - but try not to worry.

Thanks @Bloodystressed1 You know, I've been so passed myself letting them book nifty instead of me actually saying "I want it quicker" and booking Iona and Psafe instead, that I almost booked another NIPT. The quicker one. I'm mad. Insane. I almost spent £350 TWICE. Geez I'm a joke. And am idiot for not speaking up in first place.

Anyhoo, I screening midwife called me today, and she has explained my results and I feel much, much better. She even said after a good scan, your risk factor changes, so I'm essentially double my 183 now, so to speak.

Geez, pregnancy isn't easy!!!

Thanks for your insight and pov, much appreciated. I hope it all goes well for you... not long now!!! Xxx
