20 week scan done in ten minutes?

Hello!
So I just want to make it clear I’m absolutely not moaning haha- just a little concerned everything was covered in my scan! Yesterday we had our 20 week scan, they told us everything all looked fine and no issues and sent us on our way.
I’m just a little worried as the letter and people I’ve spoken to said typically it takes 20/30 minutes or sometimes even longer! I’m just worried it was a bit rushed and could all the necessary checks possibly have been done in ten minutes?! The sonographer looked fairly young so I don’t think it was a case of she’s been doing it years and years and can blitz it.
am I overthinking?! The other part of me thinks I should be grateful it was in and out as it means there isn’t a problem but I’m a born worrier and just can’t imagine how she did all the required checks in that time!
Thank you!

Sounds fine and normal to me, the baby was probably just in a convenient position. It can take longer if they need to keep moving you around hoping the baby will turn.

They probably said that time to give a guideline for paying for parking, time off work etc.

Babies don't always play ball, my sister got sent off to jump in the corridor to move the baby around!

No that doesn't sound possible. I was actually urgently re called along with every other woman that had been scanned by the same sonographer at my 20 week scan due to not being done correctly. I would ring and speak to someone.

Yes, this. The time slot is longer to allow for the sonographer to be able to accurately view everything. DC1 was not playing ball so I had to have a drink and walk about. DC2 was in perfect position so it was much quicker

I don't recall a scan taking as long as you have stated it was probably around 10 mins if I'm honest, I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh gosh really?! Was that because it was a quick one too??

I’ve got 4 children and none of my scans took 10 minutes more around 20 minutes or longer if baby wasn’t in a good position . You can get your scan report online or in your hand held pregnancy notes

Thanks for your reply- I’ve had a look in my app and it details head/abdominal circumference and estimated feral weight but not much else. Not sure how much detail is meant to be in the report that we can see as patients? Says placenta position and that they have the right amount of fluid! Should there be much else?

They're supposed to check for kidneys, heart, all the major vessels and valves, brain, spine, femur length.

I would phone them or mention to the MW at your next appointment.
But remember that Ultrasounds are fallible, they miss about 50% of congenital defects.

Needeyebrows · 04/10/2023 15:14

I've three children and don't think any of my scans took more than ten minutes.

If all the conditions are right with a baby in the right position and views are good then it is perfectly possibly to complete an anomaly scan in 10 minutes. Generally it does take a bit longer and sometimes even 2 appointments but that’s because it’s not common for the baby to be so cooperative. We generally allow 30 minutes but that is including the time it takes to call you into the room, explain the scan, perform the scan, write the report and clean the room ready for the next patient.

A 20 week scan can very easily take 10 minutes if a baby is lying in the right position, and your BMI is not too high. It can take anywhere from 7mins... To over an hour!! All depends on baby, how they're laid, if any issues arise etc.
