20 week scan - potential spinal issue?

I wondered if anyone has had anything similar, or can shed any light?

At my first 20 week scan, the sonographer said she was unable to clearly see baby's spine, because of the position baby was in. Another scan was booked for a week later.

At the second scan, the baby was in a different position but the next sonographer still couldn't see what they wanted to. She has recorded in my notes that she couldn't see the ossification centers in the sacral spine. I've been referred to the FMU at the hospital, and I'm waiting to hear from them. In the mean time, I'm driving myself mad with worry.

I understand the words individually, but I can't work out what it means for my baby? The second sonographer just kept reitterating that she wasnt worried about spina bifida, but didnt say what the issue could be.

Thanks for reading

@TwinkleCrows hello, I'm so sorry no one has replied to you yet. Im replying in the hope it bumps your post. Although not the same, as our daughter had a brain abnormality, I was in a similar situation in November and gave birth to our daughter at 25 weeks on the 2nd December after we had to have a TFMR. We too had to have multiple scans at the 20 week mark as she was in an awkward position, we also had to have an MRI and it was 4 weeks of hell as we waited. How are you doing now? I hope you are getting lots of support and everything has been explained to you, that is one of the worst parts - trying to understand. Please let me know if you have any questions. X

Sorry to hear this has happened, how are you doing? How is wee baby doing x

Thank you both for your comments. I have no news yet, the FMU scan is happening on Tuesday and until then I feel like I'm in limbo.

Oh gosh yes the waiting is the worst. Be kind to yourself though and do whatever your want to do, if you want to stay in and see no one - do that. If you want to get out of the house - do it. Long drive - do it. Scream in a field - do it. Whatever helps you to get through it. X

Hoping for all the best for you on Tuesday, like whippeywhippet says do what suits you and be kind to yourself, waiting is definitely the worst but fingers crossed everything ok, hope you have someone looking after you x

whippeywhippet · 10/01/2023 22:06

@TwinkleCrows I hope everything went as well as it could do today x

Thanks @whippeywhippet. We still don't have a definitive answer. I saw the consultant yesterday, who had a better view but still couldn't say for sure if everything is ok. She was fairly positive, but the scan will be repeated in 2 weeks. I feel calmer now than before though.
