NIPT results method

Hello all, I’m currently waiting for results on a NIPT test via the NHS after flagging a very high chance for Down Syndrome in my combined screening. The actual wait is excruciating and my anxiety is sky rocketing any time my phone bleeps or rings.

I know and appreciate the fact the NHS like to call with test results like this, but do you think it’s reasonable for me to request that I receive them via email? I feel like I will be able to cope better with time to process them by myself and then have the phone call where if NIPT is positive they will undoubtedly bombard me with all the “worst case” scenario facts. This isn’t necessary down to what we want to do if the baby does have Down Syndrome but more the shock and uncertainty of this waiting period.

Thank you for listening.

I would call the dept and ask for them to contact you via email. As you say, they may prefer to actually speak with you to discuss what the results mean and the plan going forward. When I was in a similar boat (high nuchal fold measurement identified at scan), I had a phone call to discuss my bloods after they finally agreed to do them. I preferred speaking with them only because I could ask questions and they could clarify points. Best of luck to you

By all means ask for email, they'll understand. I had an NIPT with both pregnancies (had to pay privately for the first, was available on NHS for the second). Both mine were fine/came back low risk and chances are that yours will too. Worrying / anxious a time as it is, I said to myself that all I'm doing is finding out, I can't change the result and for me that helped a bit. It's so hard waiting though. Best of luck and fingers crossed for you x

If it “helps” at all, my friend was in the same
position with both DC and they were both fine. I had 1 in 19 chance of DD having Downs and she was also fine. Hoping it’s good news for you x

@Wibbli Thank you for the advice. I got hold of the midwife in the department and they said they expect them on Monday and will email them over, and we’ve arranged a time to chat on Tuesday morning. I feel much less anxious now I know there is some kind of plan, whatever the results are.

@thejadefish I spoke to the midwife and she was very understanding and, as above comment, said my results will probably come through on Monday. My husband is very on your wavelength and “we’ll deal with whatever happens when it happens” and I’m also trying to keep that mindset, but was just struggling with all the unknown! She also said she was was hopeful about the result (my NT isn’t that high and my Papp-a is normal) but obviously that’s no guarantee on anything. Thanks for your reply :)

I would get in touch with the midwife and explain that if if the result is positive for DS you would like this broken in a positive way, because I assume you’re thinking of continuing regardless? Perhaps they should know that so they can start on the right foot. Good luck for your results!

I was given a 1 in 56 chance of trisomy 21 for DC2 due to my age & the pappa-a level etc was slightly off (neural tube measurement was within normal range though) so they were hopeful for me too, said it was most likely down to statistics. All was fine with mine, yours likely is too. Keeping fingers crossed for you x
