Please can anyone help who may be in similar situation.
iv been under consultants from early pregnancy, due to early miscarriages. I’m 24 week tomoz and Iv just had growth scan where consultant is sending me to lpool womans where I need a test where they take sample from sac but this can cause miscarriage. She mentioned chromosomes issues and maybe just genetic . But to be certain to have this . Apparently I’m on 3rd centile . I had all tests for downs etc at 12 wk where was low risk I’m just so worried 😦

Hi OP - what did they say at your 20 week anomaly scan?
my daughter has a lot of disabilities and the first signs were at the anomaly scan.
Dont take that as meaning your baby has any problems but are you able to
summ why they suggested having the amniocentesis?

Sergiomel08 · 26/07/2022 20:26

Just small at my anomoly . I only get more scans cause of growth . I’m 24 week tomoz and saying it small so need get this done to rule anything out x

You don't have to have this test, or any other test, if you don't want to. Your consultant can recommend that you have the tests but she shouldn't be telling you that you have to have them - it's your choice and she needs to be giving you the information you need to make an informed choice.

In your position (and I've been fairly close to your position, though not quite the same) I would be asking the consultant:

  • What is the risk of miscarriage from the test?
  • What conditions exactly are they looking for, and how likely is it that one is present, given baby's size?
  • If a condition is found, what is the prognosis/ treatment/ support baby might need?

This information would help me to make an informed decision.

I'm sorry you're having a tough time. If this is any help, I've had a very tiny and perfectly healthy baby (born well below the first centile, never mind the third) and I seem to be growing another - again, no reason to think this one is anything other than healthy. The majority of small babies will be absolutely fine.

Excellent post. You don't have to have the tests even if they offer/recommend them. Those are good questions to ask and another I might add is

Would the results of the tests change how we manage the pregnancy?

I would be loath to have a test that carries significant risk if it changes nothing about what you do afterwards.

Have a big hug from me too. I had 3 miscarriages and then a very difficult pregnancy with loads of bleeds and extra scans due to the opposite issue - baby too large for their liking. She arrived prematurely in the end and, after a ropey first couple of days, has thrived and is now a 4.5 year old whirlwind.

My DD was symmetrically well under the 0.4th. There were worries she had Silver Russel or any one of a range of metabolic disorders but she is just very, very small. Some babies are. However for a few being under the 3rd MIGHT indicate a baby is starting to struggle or is at risk of severe IUGR that could need an early delivery or extra care around birth. Rarely it could be down to a hidden problem that is only just starting to develop. TBH it is easy to go blank at an appointment from stress and worry about what all this might be so note down any questions you might have to take with you. In the case of my DD- being spotted as very small meant the NNICU team were ready for her at her delivery.
