Can high bhcg be a sign of defects?Nervous for 20 week ultrasound

I’ve tried posting about my high bhcg result before but no one seemed to relate or have any idea what I was talking about and people were saying my posting style was “hard to follow”.
When I had my 12 week scan and bloods taken(Nuchal measurement, pappa, bhcg) my bhcg was elevated at 4.39 MoM.
This gave me a risk of 1/500 for downsyndrome and I am only 19..no other values were elevated except for the bhcg.
Ob is assuring me I am low risk for downsyndrome and not worry, but I can’t seem to stop worrying that the bhcg might be elevated because of some sort of defect that’s not associated with downsyndrome..I am scared I’ll go to my 20 week scan and they’ll find something like spina bifida or some marker ..has anyone here had high bhcg and the anatomy scans turned out fine and baby was healthy? Also for anyone about to say I should get nipt I can’t afford it sadly.

Try not to worry if you have been told not to

Hi,

I had a similar bhcg level at 4.18 but I am expecting twins, which partly explains it. This level coupled with my age etc meant I was offered the NIPT on the NHS, which came back low risk. I’m now 22 weeks and have loads of scans because they share a placenta and no anomalies found. Please try not to worry - some women just have higher or lower levels of certain hormones. As everything else is at a normal level, I would try and enjoy your pregnancy knowing you are low risk xx

I’m glad all is fine with your babies, congratulations!I am having my 20 week anatomy scan tomorrow super nervous 😬.I am low risk and the hcg can mean absolutely nothing, but I can’t help but think some type of defect might be causing the high hcg because it’s just so high for a singleton .

Good luck for tomorrow, hopefully the scan will put your mind at ease.

That’s great news! Hormone levels tend to be higher with girls I believe. My twins are also girls. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy xx

I was going to say before I read your last post, most likely it’s because it’s a girl. Girl babies produce higher hcg than boys. Iv been told I’m having a girl and my hcg has been very high this time compared to my son, it’s been high from the very start I was getting 3+ on the digital test before my period was even due I honestly thought I was having triplets or something lol
