20 week scan - head circumference below 5th centile!

Hi everyone,
We are expecting our second child and had my 20th week scan 2 days ago. Everything was normal except the head circumference of the baby was estimated to be quite small, below 5th centile, its actually off the chart that on the report runs from 5th to 95th centiles. Although the two page report that I have got doesn't show this, but DH and I remember with full certainty that the sonographer typed BREECH on one of the images. So I am guessing that the baby at this point is in breech position and I have read that head circumference measurements in breech positions can be significantly lower than reality.

I dont remember how it was during my first pregnancy, but I remember that everything was very normal until 32 weeks when I had started developing pre-eclampsia, which got confirmed at 36 weeks with IUGR and our DS was born at 36 weeks with an emergency C-section. I have been under consultant care from the beginning this time and have appointment with them next week Tuesday.

But that seems too far away and we are getting worried sick. Can anybody please share any experience or knowledge they have on this to make us feel a bit positive until then. Due to last time's experience we have been already too anxious and this is making us feel worse.

thanks!

I had a breech baby. Ultrasound revealed a very long and narrow head which was also thought to be abnormally small. I had to have genetic counselling, was offered genetic testing and a termination.

I refused it all because I was going to keep the baby regardless. Long story short, when the baby was born she did have a very long and narrow head. She could not sleep like normal babies as the back of the head was too narrow. I had to support her with rolled up pieces of cloth on both sides of the head. Trying to put a hat on her was almost like trying to put it on a banana (slight exaggaration but I hope you get the idea) and even premie hats were too big on her.

We had to see a neurologist after a month who was shocked at the appearance of now 1 month old. Her head had rounded out so nicely during this time and he said she never had to be seen again. So basically the head took on this weird shape in the utero solely because of the breech position.

Good luck OP! I hope everything turns out well for you and your baby.

*Not neurologist, a neurosurgeon.
