12 week combined test - when to expect results?

Hi all.

First time having a 12 week scan after MCs previously - this is the furthest along I have been.

I am at "higher risk" of Down Syndrome baby due to family history. (auntie)

I have been told they will do a combined test bloods and ultrasound at my 12 week scan this week.

Anyone have any idea when I would get the results of this?

I want to share news of the pregnancy with family and friends but want to be informed first.

Thank you all (from one VERY nervous mum to be!)

I think it depends on which hospital you’re with, but usually they will call you within 3 working days if your results put you in a high risk bracket. The letter should then arrive within something like two weeks, but I’ve received both of mine within 5 days or so. Good luck, I know how terrifying the 12 week scan can be after MCs. Hope you get to see a lovely wriggly baby followed by some nice low risk results.

Letter from my bloods arrived within a week(pre covid though)
Was told if there were higher risks they would call.

JoeyLin · 07/02/2022 13:43

They call you within a few days if there is anything they need to dicuss, or you'll get a letter in 2 weeks. We got a letter at about day 8

Judging with the consistency of responses -its the same up and down the country.

We did at the time of scan get a peak at the NT measurement... I know that is 1 of the important factors they 'combine'. It's also on our scan report we could bring home.

Don't cause yourself any unnecessary anxiety like I did - its just one factor.

You hear very quickly if something is amiss. With my third the nuchal fold measurement was high. They kept me there while they run the bloods. As all came out high risk for DS I was offered a CVS on the spot. I got the all clear within 48 hours.

MontyFALD · 07/02/2022 13:58

Thank you all so much!
@Dogsandbabies so glad you got the all clear!

@JoeyLin thanks for that - I have such high anxiety at the moment. The other thing is I haven't told any friends or family about the pregnancy yet - and I was planning on doing so straight after the 12 week scan.

Now I'm wondering if I should hold off until I get the results and know what's going on with baba?

So stressful!!

@Dogsandbabies do you mind me asking if this was fairly recently?

And - what I don't know - is it only because of my higher risk of Downs S that I'm offered the combined test or is that standard!?

Slightly different to the other responses but I had the option of going in and giving blood a week before so they told me the stats on the day of the scan.

Dogsandbabies · 07/02/2022 14:02

@MontyFALD my baby is five months old so fairly recent.

The combined test is offered to everyone. I had no reason to expect the high probability other than potentially my age.

Hopefully everything will go well for you.

@MontyFALD Well, we were just so nervous to go 12 week scan that we hadn't even thought of next step on telling anyone. Tbh the whole journey from week 5 till week 12 was hard on nerves and anxiety - EVEN though nothing was ever wrong!!

It is like every time we go hospital to get an all-clear or a all-good on one front, we left the hospital with a new thing to worry about.

At the 12 week scan we were so relieved more than anything. And because they told us the NT measurement there and then, OH was confident it would mean low-risk ... but I had a thyroid consultant appointment about 2 days after and she already had my blood results for my combined on her screen (it wasn't one that shows up on my app)... So lucky I didnt' even need to wait till letter.

We went and told his parents that evening.

I don't think it's the "norm" but I was high risk and didn't get a phone call for 7 days to tell me.
That was a couple of years ago and it was around Christmas.
Don't want to add to your worry but I was in the mind set that after 3 days I could relax a bit but wasn't the case.
Best of luck though, I don't think many people have to wait that long xx

strawberrysummer19 · 08/02/2022 07:26

My friend got her phone call in 7 days, I ended up having to call after not hearing for 2 weeks
The hospital told me it takes 7 days but when I chased they said 10-14 days but would get called earlier if anything wrong - I still think it's far too long to wait - every day I was thinking what if somethings wrong and it's missed even though I waited 2 weeks and probably didn't get a call for that reason

They even tried to tell me it will be discussed at my 16 wks app! But as I called and chased they gave them to me over the phone which was low risk

I got my letter 3 days letter ( 2 wks 2 days)

X

I was told I would hear within 3 days if there was anything to tell me, otherwise I wouldn't hear anything. I did get a letter at a later date and it did give me a heartattack...but it just confirmed there was no news thankfully
