Pregnancy anxiety over scan picture.

Hi,

I’m currently 24 weeks pregnant with my second & since getting the results for the combined bloods and screening test at 12 weeks I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something wrong with my baby. My edwards ratio came back as 1:280 with low Papp-a. After the harmony test didn’t work from low fetal DNA I’ve waited until the 20 week scan to see if everything was ok. The scan went ok apart from a slight issue with the heart and have been referred on to a specialist. However to me, my scan picture doesn’t look right. It’s clear, but I can’t see a nasal bone & he looks small and I don’t know. Something just doesn’t look right with it. I’ve inserted a picture of the scan.

Looks fine to my non radiography trained eye. Could you chat over your concerns with your midwife maybe? Scans can often look weird, IMHO.

I think this is one to chat through with a trained sonographer and your midwife.

As someone who has just had a MC with a longed for baby, a scan picture of a live baby is something to be cherished, not worried over.

Good luck and I hope everything works out really well for you.

Remember a scan picture is just one 2d image of a moving 3d baby do depending on the angle things will look weird. The baby's face is likely not in profile so that may be why you can't see the nasal bone.

However if there is a potential heart issue are you having a more detailed scan? Also with low Papp a you usually have more growth scans so there'll be more opportunities to assess the baby.

I agree with others about discussing with your medical team but just to say I agonised over scan pictures with both of my LOs. They turned out to be perfectly healthy but I got so worried that something was wrong and would pick up on the tiniest thing. As PP said, it’s a snap shot of a moving baby and a millimetre of difference in position can create a different image. Anxiety makes your mind run away with you so definitely check in with your midwife and consultants for reassurance.

If you’re not a Sonographer then there’s literally no point in trying analyse a sonogram yourself, otherwise there’d be no point in all the training sonographers have to do
Best wishes to you op x

An issue is an issue , what is the problem with the heart ? If you are worried you could have an amniocentesis ? How are the babies measurements?

I do understand how you feel. My 12 week scan showed no nasal bone and high NT. I was worried about each scan following that desperately trying to see a nasal bone etc.

Do speak to your midwife or consultant, maybe they can talk you through the scan, or suggest additional tests.

We did a private scan at Fetal Medical Centre in harley street . They talk you through each and every part of the scan, and carry out additional tests IF you need and want. It was really worth it for us. Take care xx

Sorry for your loss but I feel that's a bit insensitive to say. Clearly OP has had a very anxious pregnancy and is awaiting further appointments to assess, completely understandable that she would be worried over the scan pic, it doesn't mean she doesn't also cherish it.

OP I would say the pic looks great but I can imagine you must be so worried. Can you phone the hospital to ask about it? Maybe the sonographer can have a chat with you. I hope your appointment and further scans come back OK x

No one here will know more than the experts who did your anomaly scan. Chances are baby is completely fine.

@waffle222 thank you for your feedback but as you'll see, I recommended the OP speak to an actual health professional, as at times views of random people online can be skewed / inexperienced.

Again, thanks though.
