Screening test results for DS

Hi,

I'm nearly 41 and have just found out I'm 5 + 5 weeks pregnant, I'm absolutely terrified as my last pregnancy we decided to terminate due to a high risk NIPT test then confirmed by a Amnio of the baby have DS ( no other markers were out) it was the most horrific time of my life.
I'm trying to be positive about this baby I know I'm more high risk because of my age etc so I'm trying to prepare my self as I'm having a HIPT at 10 weeks but am interested to hear others experiences....does this mean I'm automatically going to have a high risk result because of my age? If so has anyone had this happen twice? has anyone my age had low risk? Or had high risk then gone for a Amnio and it be ok?
As speaking to the screening lady at the hospital asking her she said in her whole 20 years it's very rare for it to happen again.

At that age I believe there's circa a 1 n 100 chance of having a child with DS.

Naturally that's concerning, but it's essentially it's 1% so chances of having it back to back is quite low. This doesn't negate possibility of other abnormalities, but there's a good chance the fetus is normal and healthy.

So I would wait for results of tests.

I had DS at 38, high risk 1/93 but amnio confirmed ok, DD conceived at 41, was low risk 1/1500.

When I did my combined screening , I was just past 40. The result said my age based risk was 1/80 or 1/85 for the fetus having downs. However combined with the NT and blood results the final number was more like 1/2000. Have had a few friends my age have babies in the last year or so and all were clear.. hope it goes well for you

My age-based risk at 41 was around 1/70. Age will add to your risk factor and possibly your previous experience. Plenty of people go on to have low risk results after high ones. All the best x

Firstly congratulations and all the best with your pregnancy!

I conceived at 39 and turned 40 when 16 weeks pregnant. Even the midwife at my 12 week scan said to expect a high risk screening result and then have the NIPT. It was such a stressful time for me.

My risk for the three trisomies came back as 1:10,000 so I didn't have the NIPT. I was so shocked! I'm 38+5 now!

If I decided to have another baby (see how this one goes!), I'd probably pay for earlier NIPT to reduce the anxiety (and my risk level will obviously go up at 41/42yo).

You won't get a high risk NIPT result unless there is actually a high risk (age is not considered, only the results of the genetic screening from your blood test). Hopefully the chance of it happening twice is very low - fingers crossed for you!

I'm also 41 and currently waiting for the results of my NIPT test. Can't help feeling nervous but rationally I know the chance of a low risk result is much higher than a high risk one even at my age.

I was told that a high risk result with the NHS screening is pretty much guaranteed at my age hence why I decided to pay for the NIPT test as soon as I could get an appointment which was 12 weeks so hopefully won't have to deal with the anxiety from the NHS screening.

Just wanted to let everyone know I had my NIPT results I was convinced they were going to come back high risk again but they came back low risk I still can't believe it, I can't say how relieved I am it was so so stressful waiting, I just need to tell my self to start enjoying the pregnancy Smile
