Mildly dilated right renal pelvis 36weeks

Just got back from my 36weeks scan. All the measurements were good and growth in range. The only thing that was flagged up was that the right renal pelvis is mildly dilated to 8.3mm … does anyone have any experience with this and can share it with me? I had scans at 20,28 and 32weeks and this never came out, I am obviously a bit worried.. They didn’t tell me much, just that they put an alert for the baby to be checked after birth… I of course googled it and now I am constantly worried, as it also comes out as soft marker for DS…
thank you!

My son had this and I saw a paediatric urologist while still pregnant. He said that this is quite common and that no so many years ago, it’s the sort of thing that didn’t get picked up on scans and no one ever knew about it snd it was no problem. He said he saw about 10 pregnant ladies a year for this issue and in 8-9 cases the dilation just resolved itself. In the remaining case a straightforward surgery can resolve it. Obviously anything like this is worrying but I wouldn’t worry unduly.

Thank you so much for your answer @Fleur405! They told me as soon as he will be born a paediatrician will come and check on him… hopefully all it will work out fine Xx

Hi @cloud2021, just wondering how was your baby's kidney in the end, did it resolve itself later on?

cloud2021 · 10/08/2022 14:11

Hi @Srx1 sorry for the late reply, hope it will still be useful…

my son was born on his due date, doctors said they weren’t worried about the dilation as it was under 10cm.

however my son did have some urine infections very early (2 and 4months) he therefore got checked to be sure there was no reflux and thankfully there wasn’t so there was no action needed.

he is a healthy big boy :) only thing if he has a fever we need to check him for urine infection…

2 of my children had this (both boys ). They are now 20 and 18. Both were under Great Ormond St for 2 years (only because they were doing research apparently!) Both were on prophylactic antibiotics from birth as precaution. Never had any infections and both are healthy adults now. It's stressful at the time but it's pretty common I believe ! Goodluck !

No worries @cloud2021 thanks for replying! I'm glad your boy is healthy, hopefully he won't have infections anymore!

Thank you @Tiggy321 i'm glad your boys are all good. Yes apparently it is more common in boys but also they say it is something that wasn't picked up before in scans so much like it is nowadays.

Mine was picked up quite early and I had to go for a detailed scan and consultants said it is still considered mild and I need to go again at 32 weeks. Best case would be it got smaller on it's own. If it stayed the same in relation to the baby than he would need a scan at 3 months. If it got bigger i guess antibiotics etc.. hoping it didn't get bigger !

@Srx1 yes hopefully it will decrease prior birth! Otherwise it might be the case of prophylactic antibiotics but honestly don’t worry it is very common and not a big issue at all! Xx

My ds had this. He was on preventative antibiotics for six months then we had another kidney scan which showed it had resolved. Never caused any issues.

My son had this, was on antibiotics for the first 6 months then a scan to co firm all was fine.

Thank you so much all, that's so good to hear! I'm hoping mine will be ok too 🤞🏻
