NT measurement of 7.1mm

Hi all, just looking for a bit of reassurance. I went for a scan at a private hospital yesterday at 11 weeks due to a bit of bleeding as epu couldn’t see me for a week. No cause found for bleeding but at NT measurement of 7.1mm was taken and baby also has small amount of fluid under the skin of its tummy. It measured at 10 + 6

I have my 12 week scan on weds (will actually only be 11 + 3) and have been advised by the doctor to ask for a cvs as I’m high risk for chromosome abnormality. Was given 1 in 8 chance for Down’s syndrome and 1 in 7 for edwards and pateau. Am obviously incredibly worried about this but have read some positive stories online so trying to stay positive

Has anyone been in a similar position and had a positive outcome?

I haven't had my baby yet, but at my 12 week scan my babies NT was 9.9, i was then booked in for a cvs test 3 days later. Cried the entire time, resigned myself to the fact i wouldn't be having this baby, etc.

At my cvs, NT had gone up to 11. I was booked in to see a consultant a week or so after cvs. 4 days after my test, the results for the big 3 came back, and was negative. They then said it would be up to 2 weeks later for the full set of results, i think they took 8 days, and were negative.

When i saw my consultant, the NT was down to 8.8, and i was told from here, it was a matter of ticking boxes and eliminating. They also booked a heart echo for 2 weeks later. The heart echo came back perfect, and the NT had gone down again.

At 19 weeks the NT was ranging from 5.3-6.2 (very awkward angle). I asked the midwife if you didnt know my history, would you be concerned? She said no, it was now at the high wnd of normal. I saw my consultant again at 20 weeks for another appointment and he was happy, and they dont need to see me until 28 weeks.

Im now 21 weeks, and a long way from having him, but i feel a lot more positive. They've checked for everything they physically could, and hes passing everything. He's now kicking away.

Please feel free to message me or ask any questions xx

Hi @emma1103 thanks so much for your reply. That’s amazing news for you, so pleased and it’s lovely to read such a positive story. Do you mind me asking what the cvs was like? I’m not good with needles and it sounds awful 🙈 did you have to rest after it?

I’m going to ring fetal medicine today and ask if they would fit me in on Wednesday seeing as I already know about the fluid. Just hoping they won’t make me wait for another day 🤞🏼

Hi @Bellesjp - I've posted a few times about our experience but was desperate for info when I was in your position. We had a 7.0 NT measurement at our 12 week scan and an initial diagnosis of hydrops - the hospital gave us a less than 10% chance of a successful pregnancy. We had a 1:5 chance of all 3 trisomies too.

We were referred to UCLH for a CVS 48 hours later and had multiple early stage scans. All came back clear. We then had heart scans and anomaly scans for the next 12 weeks. It was the most horrendous time. There is a lot of waiting and it felt agonising. I remember crying in the shower with my growing belly thinking I can't do this but you find a way.

I'm now lying on a bed with our healthy and very lovely 8 week old baby. I can't guarantee you will have a positive outcome and unfortunately a lot of people have an awful outcome but as one doctor told us the NT is simply a screening tool. It doesn't confirm or diagnose anything just encourages more detailed tests.

It was uncomfortable, but bearable. Not overly painful. It rook quite a while for them to find the best place. A really strange sensation when they are shaking the sample bottle while everything is still attatched. They took bloods, talked to me and my husband about our options.

I had the day off work and went home to lie down. Walking out of the hospital i felt really strange, it almost felt like a contraction. I was convinced i was going to miscarry, but luckily didn't. The next day i felt perfectly normal. X

@milkshakeandchips5 Thankyou for your reply and congratulations, what a lovely outcome after all that worry 💕 Thankyou for sharing your story, every positive outcome gives me a little bit of hope. It’s good to hear about you saying how the doctor referred to the nt as a screening tool rather than a diagnosis as a lot of things I have read have only focussed on a bad outcome.

Managed to speak to the FMU this morning to ask about the cvs, they’ve said they will scan we weds and take bloods and should be able to do the cvs same day if they feel necessary. Fingers crossed they will be able to as the waiting is unbearable, I have 5 days off work as well from weds so can take it easy afterwards also.

@emma1103 Thankyou for sharing your experience, luckily I have some time off after weds if they are able to do it then so should be able to rest and take it easy - and I expect more time to worry as well! X

Thought I would just update this post, unfortunately not with happy news 😞 the baby had quite a few serious abnormalities in my scan today, including on its brain and heart, was filled with fluid under the skin, in stomach and around the lungs and the nt had increased to 9.5mm. I didn’t go ahead with the cvs due to the severity of the abnormalities and will be going back on Friday to finish the termination. Completely devastated but Thankyou all on here for your support x

I'm sorry @Bellesjp - this is the worst news. Take care of yourself and if you haven't already, reach out to ARC. I know a few people who have been supported by them and they are brilliant. Sending good thoughts your way in this shitty time!

SensiblePeanut · 08/09/2021 16:11

@Bellesjp I am so sorry to read this. I went through a similar thing earlier this year and I also wholehearted recommend ARC. They provide a wonderfully supportive service through a thing that is just impossible to understand for anyone who hasn't experienced it.

Sending you so many good vibes xx

Bellesjp · 08/09/2021 17:11

Thankyou both for the support, just can’t want for this to be over now

@SensiblePeanut sorry you had to go through this too, life is not fair x
