Early pregnancy scan - should I be worried?

Ladies

LMP: 31st Dec
BFP: 1st Feb
1 st child
1st month ttc

According to all the pregnancy calculators, I am 6+5. I went for scan yesterday and I was told, I am 4-5 weeks pregnant. The report says there is gestational sac measuring 5mm but no yolk sac or foetal pole. There is a corpus literal cyst in the right ovary.

I have no symptoms other than tiredness (from couple of weeks), mood swings and light tenderness in breasts since yesterday. Scan with NHS booked for 24th Mar. Doc said there is no problem but should I be worried that there is not much there even at 5 weeks. Can you please share your experience with early scan to put my mind at rest.

Thank you xx

Hello. I'm not an expert as I've only had one early scan and it was yonks ago, but I do remember being told that you are lucky to see anything (as in yolk sac, heartbeat etc) before 8+ weeks because it's just too early. I was tempted to go for a scan super early but waited until 8 weeks and even then the heartbeat etc was barely visible.

Maybe your ovulation happened a bit later? Would you be able to book a private scan in a few weeks to have another look? They are expensive but could reassure you. Smile

Hi Op,

it seems like your calculations are based on your LMP, not on your ovulation. So you might have ovulated +-12 days before you got your BFP which would put up at 5+ weeks or less. I wouldn't worry yet, unless you've actually confirmed ovulation with the temperature method and have calculated your gestation according to this.

Are you being rescanned before 24 March? I'd personally look to have another scan in 1-2 weeks if not, as that will tell you if you have anything to be concerned about. I did have a similar experience but unfortunately it didn't end well. Having said that, at the time I spent ages looking up similar experiences and there were loads of positive stories where people's dates were just off and they weren't as far ahead as they thought and all turned out fine. Hope that's the case for you too. Good luck!

Thanks all

@Aria2015 I am in two minds about going for another scan. Part of me wants to do it just for my peace of mind. The other part of me is worried that as it's too early it may not change much. I have first midwife appointment on 1st Mar. Not sure what usually happens but hoping they will do some tests (not scans) on the day. For now thinking to decide after that first appointment. Thank you so much for sharing your experience xx

With my LO at 5 weeks you couldn't see ANYTHING, they called me back at 7 weeks the sac was there, but nothing in it and the sonographer (who had obviously never had sensitivity training) told me I was having a miscarriage and there was nothing inside and to deal with that...at 9 weeks when they called me in there was a doc, a sonographer and a nurse in the room (something to do with this being the third scan after two 'worrying' scans) and sac and 'baby' were clearly there. He's 18 months now. Those early scans really can be worrying when you can sometimes see nothing. Fingers crossed for you.
