Screening results

Hi everyone

I’m 29 and 17 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. My midwife called me last week and said I was high risk for Down syndrome as my result was 1/110 it completely knocked the wind out of me I was so upset.

She offered me a amino test but the risk of miscarriage was higher than the risk of Down syndrome so I booked an appointment for a private ultra sound and NIPT which is on Monday.

I had an ultra sound scan today done by a consultant, but because the baby was laid in ball she couldn’t see a lot. However she measured the babies femurs and looked at all the organs and she said she was happy with what she saw and that baby was measuring as it should at 17 weeks.

It has put my mind at rest abit and I’m not as nerves now however I’m just wondering whether I should’ve just gone for the amino and I would know for definitely if my baby has downs.

Has anyone else had results like these?

@Nicharry90 I had the exact same results from my 12 week screening test (1:110). Like you i was so worried. Baby's NT measurement was fine (2.2mm) but my hcg levels were double the normal and that combined with my age (38) gave me a high risk result.

I opted for the NIPT and although the waiting was awful, I was relieved to get a low risk result of 1:10,000. I know the test isn't 100% but the harmony test (which I took) does detect more than 99% of cases of Down syndrome and now I have a bit of perspective, although the initial odds of 1:110 was scary, those odds do translate than a less than 1% chance of there being something wrong so with those stats in mind I've not had any further testing as the risk of an amnio would have been slightly more than my actual original odds and far more than the NIPT odds.

I've had lots of scans since and the baby is showing to be healthy with very long legs (long femurs) so I've no reason to think the NIPT would be wrong and so try my best to stay positive.

I know it's scary and the waiting is horrible but do try and hold on to the fact that 1:110 means there's more than a 99% chance everything is fine with your baby. Hopefully your NIPT results will give you that reassurance. Good luck!

@Aria2015 thank you for your reply, I’m glad your baby is healthy and wish you all the best. It’s nice to hear that I’m not alone and other people have had this too.

I keep reminding myself it’s less than 1% chance and that reassures me. Also the consultant I saw yesterday didn’t seem worried so I guess I shouldn’t either.

It was just a shock because when I had my daughter her results was really low so I never gave it a second thought this time.
