Wrong NIPT Gender?

ELLIELOUEFF · 30/07/2020 19:48

Hi!

I had the NIPT test done at 12.5 weeks as I had a higher chance of downs so we wanted to be able to prepare if so!

We were also told that we would be having a girl. 💕

However, I had my 20 week scan today & the technicians (after several opinions) all agreed that we are having a boy!

They said they had never heard of anyone having the wrong gender on the NIPT & so were worried about the results being mixed up or something!

Obviously we are now a bit worried that we have been given false results!

It’s a long shot but has anyone experienced this or heard of similar? 👍🏼

No, I've never heard of incorrect gender although I believe it can happen with a vanishing twin but that would be incorrectly told Male. I thought the test was extremely accurate for Gender.

Can you contact the clinic and request a redraw and private scan?

No never heard of this. Who did you use for NIPT? It wasn't ultrasound direct was it? I would definitely get in touch with them. That's terrible

We used Iona through the hospital but they have refused to do a retest as they say it is not 100% accurate. So they assume we are the 1% failure!

I’m sure I have heard of it being wrong. If they haven’t picked up the Y chromosome then they will say girl. I think if they say boy, they can’t be wrong but there’s slight chance they can be with girl. X

RHTawneyonabus · 02/08/2020 18:58

It’s a test of baby’s DNA. So don’t think it could be wrong.

We went through Bath Hospital & we used the Iona test?

I have been told this so I'm hoping that's the case & the first test was just incorrect about the gender & not the Downs results! 🤞🏼

So we have spoken with the Iona testing & the hospital & they say that because the gender test is not related to the Downs test & because it is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate that they will not retest for free!

So we can either pay £400 for a new test or wait a little longer for an additional ultrasound they have offered us!

It's all a bit of a confusing mess! 😫

@ELLIELOUEFF I’m sure it’s 99.9% accurate for downs. And I’ve never ever heard of that being wrong. I’m sure they would be spot on with that.

I feel for you. It’s stressful enough having to even get that test, never mind mistakes. X

I guess in all cases there can be false positives. Did Bath offer you this test free? I ended up paying privately before my dating scan which would have been at Bath x

We had the free screening from the NHS at our 12 week scan but then paid £400 for the private Downs test as our screening came back as higher risk. X

@ELLIELOUEFF did the hospital give you any reassurance about the downs test? At 20 weeks they should have been able to see if there were any problems? I think it's awful that you've paid for a test for reassurance and this has happened.

They said that they can't see anything on the scan which is definitely reassuring! & they called today to say they will be giving me an additional scan in a couple of weeks time which should be more in depth!

So there are positives coming it's just a hard wait. 😔 x

@ELLIELOUEFF I'm sure all will be well and you can start enjoying expecting your lovely baby x

JessicaPeach · 03/08/2020 21:54

I would be tempted to go back to them and ask how they can be certain that you received the right results and not those of another person, that would probably be my concern here. Either they explain how the sex can be wrong but confirm how they know the other result is correct (within whatever degree of accuracy) and explain how samples couldn't get mixed up or they need to do a retest to confirm the same result as the first test.

[AUTO]1mstlkdftn8mg · 04/08/2020 13:38

@ELLIELOUEFF I'm sort of in same boat - private paid for panorama at 9 week saying girl but sonographer at 12 weeks (maternity hospital scan not a private paid for one ) offered to tell me if I wanted because it was so obviously a boy. Neither will guarantee 100% accuracy so almost wishing now I waited til the 20 week scan.

Having the wrong results was my concern too! I have spoken to them & they went through their procedures & explained why they think I can't have someone else's.

But it's not really putting my mind at that much ease.

It sounds like a very similar situation although our confusion came at our 20 week scan!
Just would like to know the reliability of the trisomy results! ♥️

I think from my research today that they are separate tests and looking for different things - I know this doesn't exclude a mix up but I think there seems to be evidence that NIPT-girl Scan - boy senario is more likely to happen - if it was visa versa I'd be more concerned about a mix up. I'm sure all will be fine but it is really difficult to take in !!

EveningReflection · 06/08/2020 20:38

I believe that some of the NIPT providers always tell you the sex. The SAFE test version that I had, will only tell you if they're certain. In around 3% of cases they don't (sod's law... I was one of those). I think it's because they didn't have enough of the baby's DNA. Anyway, the sex determination aspect of NIPT is generally considered as an added extra, so they won't retest for it. Theres a margin of error with both NIPT and scans, so I'm not sure what to tell you.
