Hi all,

I got my BFP yesterday, I rang the gp was told to self refer to hospital did that and received a letter for my first scan at 10weeks in the post today.

My question is I thought that maybe I'd get bloods done before this to confirm the pregnancy. Anyone know much about this. I don't know where I should ask to have them done ?

Thanks
First pregnancy ever to btw. 💜

Congratulations on your pregnancy. No one actually confirms your pregnant anymore so the first time is your scan I’m afraid. You should get a booking in appointment where they will take some bloods etc but it’s not a pregnancy test. L

SpacePug · 23/07/2020 16:36

You got bfp yesterday and got the letter today, that is so fast! Congratulations! I'm 16weeks pregnant with my second, I had to self refer then get a booking appointment at around 8/9 weeks. They don't test for pregnancy round here, I think it's standard not to as far as I know. At your booking appt they will take urine sample, blood etc and do all their tests from those , one will test for pregnancy I assume but theres a long list of things they test for. So yeah, don't worry it's normal I believe to not have any tests until first midwife appointment

Thank you 😊 I just presumed they would do something earlier. Thanks for the reply

@SpacePug I know I couldn't believe when I opened the mail. But my hospital is literally 2mins down the road so Maybe that's why no idea. Appointment isn't until end of September, thanks 😊

Also congratulations for you too @SpacePug

I was the same with my first, I thought that they'd want some kind of proof first 😂 at my 12 week scan I was genuinely terrified I'd turn up and they'd tell me I imagined it all and I'd feel like an idiot 😂😂 but thankfully not 😅

You should get a "booking" appointment with a midwife though? Where they just meet you and go through your general health etc and "put you on the books" so to speak.

Tiff94 · 23/07/2020 16:42

@TJ17 okay thanks that's great to know. They should just sent it to me yeah ?

Congratulations. Bloods aren't done to confirm pregnancy. Depending on where you are booked and Covid changes to the schedule of antenatal care, you should have your booking in appointment with a midwife around week 9-10. Bloods are taken at this initial appointment and they also consent you for your scans at the same time. Some NHS trusts are doing this differently atm and you may be offered a booking appointment over the phone.

TJ17 · 23/07/2020 16:44

I'm not sure they would.

For me I had to call my local midwife team myself, I met with her to have my booking appointment as she was the one who referred me to the hospital for my scan and I just waited for the letter for that.

So looks like they've told you something different (I think it does vary on area) but I would google your local midwife and contact them just to be sure.

TJ17 · 23/07/2020 16:46

Google "community midwife"
And your area and hopefully you'll find a number (or ask the GP for a contact)

Congrats by the way 🤗

TJ17 · 23/07/2020 16:47

By the way I also found the GP to be really unhelpful with my first as like you I had no idea of the process or who to contact! It's not made clear at all!

Tiff94 · 23/07/2020 16:51

@TJ17 thanks when I contacted the gp the just told me to self refer which I did and they sent me antenatal nuchal scan for sept 24th when I'm 10weeks. I will google and give the local midwife a call and see what she's says.

@Tiff94 you'll be in the Trust system if you have a scan date so no need to chase as you are very early on. Usually scans are sent before your booking appointment. If you've not heard by week 8, then I'd probably chase.

Tiff94 · 23/07/2020 17:00

@FallingIguanas many thanks I will keep that in mind.

Thanks everyone for the reply 😊😊😊

Sorry there's so much conflicting info 😂

I have just both times been told to make a booking app with my midwife and then she has referred me for a scan and I have had the date through a few weeks later 🤷🏼‍♀️

Must be different everywhere! 😅

sel2223 · 24/07/2020 01:21

Is that letter definitely for the scan and not for the booking in appointment,?

The booking in appt is usually between 8 sbd 10 weeks then the dating scan should be between 11 and 14 weeks....any earlier and i don't think they can do the combined screening tests.

I would call up just to clarify that.

But yes, early pregnancy is very surreal in that nobody actually confirms your pregnancy or wants to see you at all until 2-3 months in.

Tiff94 · 24/07/2020 08:29

@sel2223 yes definitely a scan. I will wait to see for a little bit if I don't receive a booking appointment I will contact them

OP posts:
2CatsAndCounting · 24/07/2020 08:33

some areas are doing booking in appointments at the dating scan currently due to Covid so maybe that is what your area is doing.

NatARG · 25/07/2020 11:44

This thread is helpful. I had my first BFP and got a letter through for an appointment with midwife around 12 weeks. Is this late? Not sure if it's for a scan or a general conversation. Thinking of going private and paying for an early scan just to reassure me! Confused

Tiff94 · 25/07/2020 11:51

@NatARG I've spoke. To the midwife since and recieved my booking appointment in the mail today for 4weeks time but it's telling phone appointment apparently at my 11weeks scan they will do bloods and urine as well.

Just jumping on this - hope you doing mind. Congratulations OP! Like OP I recently found out I was pregnant with my first. I am now 7+3. I called my GP, who told me to self refer.

I now have a "midwife episode" appointment tomorrow at the hospital in person

A booking appointment over the phone on 18th August (on the phone due to Covid - said the call would be approx 90 mins)

Scan on 28th August.

What is the "episode appointment" tomorrow? Do you think that because My booking appointment is over the phone, they want me to go tomorrow too to do things (like blood / screening tests) in which case couldn't they just do everything there and ignore the phone call?

Would be keen to hear what you think - I hope they'll do tests tomorrow as there won't be any other chance to otherwise!
