9.1mm NT at 12 weeks

Hi all.

Now in week 19 of pregnancy but wondering if anyone has had a similar experience..?

We had a very high 9.1mm NT at 12 week scan, and as I've read on other threads here this tends to end in TFMR as CVS is likely to come back positive for serious conditions. Against everyone's expectations, ours came back with no indicators of genetic conditions and since then his NT and amniotic fluid have gone down. He has complete AVSD heart condition which will need surgery at 3-6 months but apart from that isn't showing any signs of genetic conditions. I'm really nervous that with the high NT he will have something we've just not found yet.

Hi,

I’m going through something similar at the moment so unfortunately I can’t tell you anything about the outcome as I’m also waiting to see how things turn out when the baby arrives.

We had a 6.1mm NT, clear CVS and baby was also diagnosed with a heart condition (Tetralogy of Fallot) which will require surgical treatment.

They mentioned that with an NT this high there could be a genetic condition but like you we’ve had no other markers so far.

It’s nerve-wracking but I’m trying to stay positive and enjoy the pregnancy. I hope things turn out ok for the both of us and it is ‘just’ the heart condition.

Thanks for your reply @Dcw20 and sorry you're also having to go through this. When are you due?

It is completely nerve-wracking, you're right. And not sure google is my friend as you can go down so many rabbit holes.

Are you talking to any support groups or have found any parent to parent contacts that help? I've joined ECHO charity but can't find any on the genetic side with positive results.

Wishing for a magic ball!

@SianVLeo I’m due early November - I’m hoping there isn’t a second wave of Corona virus by then!

When are you due?

I’ve found a Facebook support group which is helpful but haven’t looked at charities yet.

Google definitely doesn’t help, I had a really bad stage where it’s all I did but that has eased off recently luckily as I feel like I’ve already read everything possible and it just made me feel worse.

Have you had your 20 week scan already?

SianVLeo · 24/07/2020 08:35

Ah I'm due early December so not too long after you. Fingers crossed no second (or third waves) but who knows.

I had my 20 week scan this week (at 19+2) and they flagged short femurs which could be an indicator of downs (although we've been cleared of that through CVS), dwarfism or could be nothing. They are monitoring very closely, which I'm grateful for, and I've another scan next week with a genetic specialist.

I suppose the only light is that reading other stories it seems that if something was drastically wrong (outside of the heart condition), it's likely to have been picked up by now.

Easier said than done but try not to worry about the femur length, my nephew had short femurs on scans the whole way through and was completely fine. Babies grow at different rates so they may catch up as you get further along.

It’s good you have extra monitoring though 😊 and like you said, I’m sure other issues would have been flagged by now.

I just find the waiting between scans and appointments difficult as that’s when the anxiety starts to creep back in! My next scan isn’t until the end of August now.

Hi,
sorry I know this is an old thread but I had my 12 week scan yesterday and a 9.1mm NT reading was given. We have an emergency fetal medicine apt today. How did both your pregnancies turn out? Can you give me hope? 🤍 thank you

SianVLeo · 07/05/2025 19:28

Hi @Exc . I hope you’re doing ok - it’s quite a shock getting news like that.

Im sorry to say that my pregnancy ended with a TFMR due to various things, some mentioned above. We had genetic testing done across myself, my partner and the fetus and found out about 6 months after that my partner and I both carry a gene for one of the rarer genetic conditions. We’d had no idea until that point.

Sending hope that yours turns out differently.

Hey,

thank you so much for responding. I’m so sorry that it ended that way.

we had our apt today and it was concluded that baby has a cystic hygroma, they did a CVS and will get the results for that on Monday but due to the size and severity, they have also suggested a TFMR so will be booked in for this asap.

gutted and heartbroken as we went through rounds of fertility treatment to conceive little one 💔

thank you for sharing your story.
