20 Week Scan - Short Femur?

RainbowL2020 · 14/05/2020 22:14

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone has had something similar and had their baby's already maybe? 😊
At my 20 week scan everything went fine apart from she mentioned my baby's femur bones were measuring quite small (on the 7th percentile) so I was asked to go back yesterday at 22 weeks for another scan. His legs have grown since last time but now showing around the 5th percentile. This is because 2 different ladies measured him and one got 32mm and the other got 34mm so they went in the middle with 33mm. She said if she had gone with the 34mm then I would be dismissed as it's on the borderline for "average range" but it's just dipped below so's she's referred me to see a consultant for another scan next week.

I had quite heavy bleeding for 3 weeks earlier on in the pregnancy and wondering if this could have any link at all?

Thanks x

Mine was the same - bleeding, extra scan, etc. Femur length was fine after that and he's now a healthy 9 month old

Redwinefine thanks for replying that's great glad everything was ok 😊when did your baby's femurs start to catch up?

My boy twin had short femurs throughout (2nd centile) as well as other markers too including NT at 6.1mm. He's 3y 4m and nothing at all wrong, just a bit smaller than his sister. Red book says last review he was on 25th centile. Hope that offers some reassurance x

Hi mintchick! Aw really that's great it does thank you, I've read lots of replies on older thread about this being the case that their babies were just a bit smaller or caught up later on down the line

I had 2 girls. Different pregnancies. Both has short femers

Both eventually went on to have IUGR severely. But due to placental problems

Both a very happy healthy child.

Hoghleludo thanks for your reply! Yeah I was thinking it might have something to do with my bleeding earlier on in the pregnancy as I had a low lying placenta but they said on my last scan it's moved out of the way now which is good 👍🏼

I remember with my first pregnancy they mentioned the femurs being short at the scan. I can’t recall which scan it was but think it could have been about 16 weeks when getting an amino as high risk for Down syndrome. He’s now 19 and 6 ft 2”!

RainbowL2020 · 16/05/2020 10:31

Candle 18 thanks for your reply! Haha wow 6 ft 2 that's good to know, hearing everyone's responses has made me a lot less worried 😁

@RainbowL2020 It was in the third trimester, I think. I was high risk so had extra scans anyway and they kind of blended together now so I can't quite remember!

RainbowL2020 · 17/05/2020 14:43

Ah ok thank you 😊

Hi all just wanted to update! After all the worrying my baby boy was born 19th July at 31w + 4 because I had a placental abruption. Turns out my placenta was never working as it should of been (even though every scan it was checked and always said to be fine) so my boys arms and legs measured small on their charts but absolutely healthy just small at 3lb 4! He's in NICU at the moment which is emotionally really tough but he's doing really well and progressing as he should. I am just so thankful that we were in the right place at the right time and my gorgeous boy is safe and well 💙 x

@RainbowL2020 awwww. Congratulations!! So pleased to hear about your little one. We had a nicu journey but stay strong and you'll soon have him home Smile

RainbowL2020 · 03/08/2020 22:54

@doublethecuddlestwinmum aww thank you 😊 how long was you NICU stay? X

@RainbowL2020 My twins were 34 weeks so a little further on than your little one, they stayed in 14 days to learn to breastfeed and regulate temp. They were 3lb 14 and 4lb 8oz so your little one is a good weight in comparison considering he was 31 weeks! X

RainbowL2020 · 04/08/2020 09:55

@doublethecuddlestwinmum aw really that's good that's the stage my son is at now he's been taken off everything and seems to be maintaining his temp ok in the cot he's now in and learning to breastfeed every day 🥰 also the weight I put should of said 3lb 7. His last weight from Saturday was 3lb 13 so we're thinking he may of hit the 4lb mark by his next weigh tonight! X

Hi @doublethecuddlestwinmum we are just coming home from visiting now but he's not been weighed yet so they've said to ring in the morning but we can see his little cheeks filling out and they have said today he's just about ready to move down rooms and start preparing to go home 🙏🥰 x
