Hi all. I was looking for a bit or help/reassurance!
At my recent 20 week scan my soon to be daughter has what is suspected talipes in her left foot. We are waiting for a call from the hospital once the consultant has seen the images but wait feels like forever!

I’ve done what I probably shouldn’t, I’ve done lots of google research. It’s all very scary, especially this is our first pregnancy after several miscarriages. From what I can see, there are 2 types of talipes- Positional and Structural.
What I would like to know however is can positional talipes be detected at the 20 week scan. Or if it is detected at the scan does it always mean the talipes is structural?
I really hope someone can help xx

Hi there, i found out at my scan today that my son appears to have right sided talipes. I can't offer much (any) advice but just wanted to say hey, you're not alone, and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed and anxious about all of this too so completely get where you are coming from.

I have an appointment with the consultant next Wednesday so will let you know what they say. I had a rather unhelpful conversation with a midwife after the scan but she did give me the steps website which is quite helpful.

Anyway, take care, congratulations on your baby girl. You will love her regardless but if you want to vent I am here and feeling like a good old vent too 👍

I’m 42, was born with bilateral talipes, have EDS. Please don’t fret unduly. Whilst I have no idea what your scan has revealed I can assure you that life is still normal for me and my talipes/eds hasn’t stopped me having a fabulous time for the last 42 years. LOTS of physio. But totally marvellously fine.
Congratulations on your pregnancies, (both of you). Please don’t worry unduly about something that sounds alarming but is usually incredibly manageable.

My dd had positional talipes when she was born. We weren't aware and it hadn't been picked up on my scan.
Try not to worry too much OP, and don't google, it always makes things seem worse!

There’s a charity called STEPS. Not sure if you’ve come across them. But I think they have a helpline you can call.

My daughter had talipes, which is completely resolved. She was treated using the ponseti method which is best practice for severe talipes. It involved her having plaster casts on both legs for 3 months as a newborn, which were replaced every week, then wearing a brace for 3 months full time, and then wearing the brace at night until she was 5.
It sounds scary but after the first 6 months her legs were corrected and she was physically totally normal, just happened to wear a brace at night. And the plaster casting phase was a nuisance because we travelled to go to the national orthopaedic hospital at stanmore but it was ok otherwise. She wasn't really aware (although did have very strong legs as baby because of the weight Grin).
She is now a fit and healthy 7 year old and you would never know.
We used the charity Steps to find our treatment centre - have a look because I believe some regional hospitals don't follow best practice - we met a few of these kids at stanmore who were having issues corrected.

PM me if you have any questions x
