Deafness

Hi,
I am mildly deaf. Both my parents are hearing... I believe this is due to them both carrying a deafness gene.

My husband is hearing, just wondering what are the chances of me passing my deafness on to the baby?

Thanks.

Do you mean your parents and husband have a hearing impairment?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 20/12/2019 04:50

No she's the only person with a hearing impairment I believe.

OP do you not have an official explanation as to what caused your impairment?

Yes, I have the hearing impairment. Everyone else fine. No official explanation that I am aware of but I vaguely remember saying it was because both parents carried the gene.

Suggest you contact the lead midwife for screening at you hospital and ask for a referral to the regional genetics team to discuss this if it is something that is bothering you.
However, all babies are offered hearing screening in the first few days of life, so baby’s hearing will be checked then and if an issue was found could then be investigated.

I am hard of hearing, and was offered genetic screening when I was younger via my audiologist. Do you receive care from the audiology team at your hospital? They should be able to refer you for screening if the cause of your deafness is unknown. In my case the cause is officially still unknown as my screening came back negative for the known genetic causes of deafness.
