So this weekend just gone, me and my husband found out via 5 home pregnancy kits that we’re expecting our first baby.
I have my first GP appointment tomorrow to confirm the pregnancy. Apparently you’re supposed to do this to get the ball rolling.
I’ve Googled like crazy what the Dr’s confirmation will entail, but I can’t find a difinitive answer.

Will they ask me to do a urine test there and then? I’ve read that as the home tests are reliable, they will often take your word for it rather than do tests.
Will they do an ‘internal examination’? This is my biggest worry...will I need to make sure I’m presentable?

Any tips from the UK would be great (I say UK as out of the UK procedures may differ).

Thank you

Yes, it is super confusing because different areas do different things, but it sounds like you're on the correct path!

It'll all become much clearer once you see the MW for the first time as they'll explain what's next and when to expect scan appts etc. Every hospital/area does differently again though so what you read online on MN may be different to how your area does things.

Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!

Hi Op. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

In my first pregnancy I had to see the practice nurse at the GP in order to be referred to midwife; they tested my urine, and in my second I have had to self refer. Both times I phoned GP surgery first and they informed me what the procedure was. I'm sure you're not wasting an appointment and that the surgery are aware what you are going for.

Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Sorry OP I wasn’t trying to burst your bubble, I just wanted to let you know how it was for me as I felt like a right Wally when I went to the Doctors!
My husband took the afternoon off work so we could go together and I thought it would I’d be a really nice appointment and that she would do a pg test etc but it was the exact opposite and a total let down!

If you’ve been told to see your GP then go with that Smile

Best of luck and congratulations!!!! Flowers

With my first pregnancy I saw GP as I didn't know what to do. He congratulated me and filled in/submitted the midwife referral form on my behalf. He also examined my stomach to check I wasn't 'way off' with my dates, and gave some basic (but useful) advice about what I shouldn't be eating etc while waiting for my booking appointment. He explained the symptoms of early miscarriage, gave me the local EPU contact details to call if i was worried. He also explained that the community midwifes can be very busy, and if I ever couldn't get a midwife appointment or had any worries, then the GP surgery was a back-up option that I should always turn to in the absence of a readily available midwife. I didn't think it was a wasted appointment at all, and the GP definitely didn't make me feel that way

I'm currently pregnant for the second time, and this time I just self referred directly, as I already knew all of the above.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, and good luck with the GP appointment!

Definately don't worry op you can't self refer in all NHS areas - sounds like you have done exactly what you are meant to do in your area. In some areas GP will ask which hospital you want to refer too - so if there is likely to be a choice for you then you might want to think about that before the appointment.

My Surgery makes you see the GP before referring you to the midwife. All three of mine I tried to self refer but wasn't allowed and they did confirm by making me pee and did a dip test. Bit of a chat about how I felt about the pregnancy ( was quite nice with DC 3 to help process as he was a surprise) then sent with note to reception to be put into midwife list.

Bit of a waste of time but what was required.

I booked an appointment with my GP like you because thats what is says on NHS website.
My GP checked my blood pressure, weight and did general health questionnaire. She said they don't retest as home tests are accurate enough, she asked if I had any questions and She then referred me to the midwifery team who contacted me for a booking appointment at around 8 weeks.
Congratulations! My LO is 3months old on Friday Grin

You've not done anything wrong op! I did the exact same thing, like you, I went off the NHS website guidance. I had a nice chat with the gp, she gave me quite a lot of reassuring (and realistic) advice about the many and various eating and drinking guidelines and explained what the process was re. booking in and further midwife appointments. She didn't have the attitude that I'd wasted an appointment, that was just me feeling that way after realising I didn't really need to be there.

I did find it weird, with both pregnancies, that until the 12 week scan there's no confirmation that you are actually pregnant! But I suppose there's no point repeating the same test that's already been done at home.

I wasn't examined internally until my sweep the day before the due date, then again when I rocked up at the delivery suite about 30 mins off delivering! 12 and 20 week scan are both abdominal ultrasound.

Congrats on your pregnancy, hope it all goes really smoothly for you.

I booked a GP appointment with my first too, it is the NHS advice, they need to update I though as it seems like it's totally unnecessary.

I would recommend reading Expecting Better by Emily Oster, it's a great helpful book when you're not sure what you should be doing.
