12 Week screening test

Hey everyone,

We had our 12 week scan on Thursday and unfortunately the fluid on the back of our babies neck measured 6mm. We were obviously shocked and extremely taken back as we just didn't expect this. I had my bloods taken and the phone call the next day it confirmed I was high risk with a 1 in 6 chance of the baby having downs, and a 1 in 242 chance of the baby having Edwards or Pataus. We're having the CVS test on Monday which I'm extremely apprehensive about. Can anyone share their experiences? I don't feel very positive as for someone my age (26) my Downs ratio should be 1 in 150 and my Edwards and Pataus should be 1 in 10,000! Feeling extremely over whelmed and we don't know anyone who has had anything similar happen to them :(

That’s still an 84% chance that your baby DOESN’T have Down’s syndrome though. That’s still really good odds.

Good luck tomorrow OP. I had a similar fluid measurement in my first pregnancy, and also had a CVS, which was not pleasant, but not painful either. The high measurement may indicate one of the three syndromes you've mentioned above, but it could also be the result of a completly different genetic issue, or a consequence of a structural anomaly with no underlying genetic cause, or a result of an infection, or your baby may be completly healthy, and it's just one of those things! The CVS should give you more information and hopefully a better idea of the prognosis, and you might find the charity antenatal results and choices (ARC) helpful - they have a phone line, and a lot of knowledge! All the best, I have my fingers crossed for you.

Thank you so much, I found your post incredibly helpful. I have been browsing ARC website and found that so informative as well so thank you for that. It was just so daunting when you have your scan expecting everything to be fine and then you can tell something's not quite right. Thank you again Smile

Hi OP. I hope your CVS went well. Did you get a detailed scan as well?

I am 40 and was given a Down's risk of 1 in 5 a couple of weeks ago (NT 3.8), had a CVS on 6/4. Have just had the full chromosome results today and baby has no sign of any chromosomal abnormalities. It's such a relief. So I know exactly what you're going through. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you too xx

Hey,

Oh my goodness it's the shock isn't it when you hear for the first time that there is something wrong. I'm so happy you've had the results back you wanted Smile

We've got the wait for our results now and I really hope everything's ok. We had a detailed scan which was quite bitter sweet because it just made everything seem a lot more intense. Xx

Hi OP, glad to hear you've had a detailed scan. Some of the health problems which may go along with Downs are scary, but scans will detect lots of those. Many people with Downs don't have those problems. This is a lovely website by parents for parents, whether your baby has Downs or not.

ARC are knowledgeable about tests. Not so much about what life with Down Syndrome is actually like.
