I just got a call from the hospital and I have a 1/60 chance of Downs. Has anyone else had this result and if so what did you do/what happened? I guess I just need a bit of reassurance, I'm a highly anxious person and I was dreading this happening. I'm 30 and this is our first baby, we are so so happy and excited but every little thing is terrifying me and now this ... We are going to see midwife this afternoon at 4 to discuss results but I'm freaking out. 😢

Hi EggysMom, my partner is Deaf. His Mum wrote a lovely book back in 1987 about becoming the parent of a Deaf child, and why they learned sign language. Sign language can also be a really useful communication tool with autistic children. The book was called “Language For Ben” by Lorraine Fletcher. The cute boy on the cover is my partner (now 37)!

With DD we had a 1/10 of Downs-we had the amniocentesis as there wasn't any other option at that time even though she's not very old now-medicine moves so fast! I couldn't cope with not knowing, so just did it and spent a few days crying and worried!
Anyway that came back negative, so my other tests were just a false positive. Good luck with it all x

@Ruth1988
Thanks for your message. No, sadly I'm still waiting 😩. I was so sure results would come back this morning. It really is torture and I'm not doing well today. I can hardly eat for worrying and anything I do eat I throw up due to morning sickness which I still have really bad. I know exactly what you mean about disassociating from the baby. For nearly 2 weeks now I've not looked at my pregnancy books or baby care books and I can't be as excited as I was because everything could just change. I'll be 16 weeks on Friday. Xx

Omg about 5 minutes after I wrote my last post, I got a text saying my results are in - rang the clinic and I'm happy to say that all is well with my little one. I cannot describe the relief that washed over me. All that worrying for nothing. Makes me wonder if the NHS tests are really worth it in some cases. If I could go back I wouldn't have the test again and certainly won't be having it if we have anymore children.
Thank you to all you wonderful, supportive ladies on here. It was so helpful to hear your experiences and words of reassurance and wisdom. I can now get back to concentrating on caring properly for myself and looking forward to becoming a mum! @Ruth1988 I'm just like you. No doubt I will find lots more to be worried about throughout this experience! Xx

Excellent. Waiting for my own NIPT results at the moment.

The score you get from the triple test is from a complex algorithm. You plug in the numbers and you get a risk factor out. Obviously there is a big normal variation in levels of each of the items tested and so it’s only a probability. This is quite a nice summary if you’re interested (I’m a geneticist...) so this does mean that women with one really out of range result like your high hcg can get erroneously high probabilities.

So you can think of the levels of these chemicals as being like one step removed from the DNA. The NIPT testing is looking directly at the DNA. It can’t technically be a yes/no diagnostic because it’s not looking at a physical cell from the baby itself, but it it’s as good as we are getting and with the zero risk to the foetus it will hopefully replace amnios and CVSs as a second line screen.

It is also worth having the scan anyway because a high nuchal fold measurement can indicate other issues too. I had both - just waiting for results

blueberrymuffin88 · 07/02/2018 16:36

@Backenette that's really interesting, I do actually find it very fascinating so it's good to understand it a bit better. Good point about the NT scan as well. Hope all your results come back OK.
