Slap Cheek Exposure in Early Pregnancy

Hi. After 2 and a half years of TTC, I'm finally pregnant after my first round of IVF.

im 8 weeks and today my friend came to my house with her 2 year old son. I was kissing him on the lips etc. She took him to the doctors after this and was told he has slapped cheek virus. She phoned and said I needed to get checked asap as it can cause all sorts of complications.

I had my bloods taken today and thwn in s weeks time another set and if my anti bodies levels have risen, I've got the virus and have to be referred to an obstetrician.

I am panicking beyond belief and can barely function. I'm taking steroids from my IVF and they bring your immune system down. I'm beside myself. Has anyone got experience or knowledge of this?

Hi Cherry, I had a bit of a scare at a similar time to you as one of my pupils had slapped cheek. The doctor told me that most adults are immune as it's very common to have a mild case which just seems like a bit of a cold. Hopefully you are immune too.

The doctors I'm at won't do the immune test only test for the active infection. My mum says she doesn't know ehat slapped cheek is so i haven't had it as a child. I have flu like symptoms which I thought was hayfever. I'm incredibly worried.

Both my sons had slapped cheek in the first 8 weeks of my third pregnancy. I had blood tests and was not immune. I had further blood tests every two weeks until 20 weeks to check the virus hadn't developed but thankfully it didn't and that was with living with two infected children, not just a chance encounter with one.

I would see if you can get the immunity test from somewhere else as that would put your mind at rest. You're most likely immune, if not then you're unlikely to have caught it. Worst case and you do catch it the chances of it affecting the baby are very small and they will monitor you like crazy to keep a check on things. The doctor who took my bloods at the time seemed to think we were making a big fuss over nothing. Please try not to worry, x.

My mum doesn't know what it is either, but I've obviously had it at some point! As I said, the doctor told me most people have had it, but don't even know that they have. I would definitely see if you can get an immunity test done to put your mind at rest.

I've asked the midwife today to check my bloods for both immunity and the infection. She had done my initial bloods for Hep B and HIC etc and she put a note on them to say check for IGM and IGG. Hopefully I'll get some answers next week. She didn't seem to know much about it.
